A Tuesday-afternoon crash on U.S. 231 brought traffic to a halt north of Greencastle Tuesday afternoon at McBride’s Corner.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., a DHL delivery van was stopped northbound, attempting to turn onto County Road 200 North when it was rear-ended by a semi hauling a tanker trailer.

A witness told Deputy Scott Ducker that the semi, which was pulling a fully-loaded concrete pumper trailer, hit the van at high speed.

The impact caused heavy damage to the rear of the delivery van as well as the front of the semi tractor. The van was also pushed several hundred feet north of the intersection.

The driver of the DHL truck, 61-year-old Carl Akard of Indianapolis, was transported from to an Indianapolis hospital by Putnam County EMS, though his injuries were not believed to be serious.

The driver of the semi, Mark Steele of Stockwell, was not injured.

The semi tractor briefly caught fire, but was quickly extingished by a passerby.

The road was closed for the vehicles to be towed as well as for Greencastle Fire Department to clean up the large amount of oil that was spilled on the roadway.

The southbound side of U.S. 231 was reopened as of 3:40 p.m. Responders left the scene shortly before 4:30 p.m.

  • Possibly distracted driving? Possibly on his cell phone instead of watching the road?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

  • Prayers and thankful there were no serious injuries. Accidents do happen and people are always the first to comment negative things about the drivers. It could have been a health issue that caused the accident. The point is: it is not our place to guess and judge; and what difference does it make to us as to what caused the accident?

  • @Nit--you sound just like Hillary Clinton commenting on the Americans being allowed to be killed in 2012. It makes all the difference in the world for the TRUTH to be told.

Given the proliferation of cell phones everywhere with people using them while driving is so common today. I see plenty of semi drivers using them while going down the road.

Just like that young female driver in northern Indiana who hit those kids because "she didn't see the school bus with its flashing lights". She was on her cell phone as well.

How many more people need to die at the hands of those driving and paying more attention to social media than paying attention???
