City Police

Three recent arrests were reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 11:49 p.m. Wednesday, Ryan Wilson, 44, Martinsville, was arrested by Officer Brad Hiatt.

Lodged in the Putnam County Jail after being taken into custody on Anderson Street, Wilson was arrested on a Putnam County warrant for theft and possession of methamphetamine.

• At 3:37 a.m. Tuesday, Jacob Williams, 25, Fillmore, was arrested by Officer Luke Brown.

Taken into custody on Zinc Mill Road and lodged in the Putnam County Jail, Williams is facing a new charge of invasion of privacy, while also being held on a Putnam County warrant for violation of a no-contact order.

• At 7:12 p.m. Monday, Cynthia Smith, 53, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Angela Taylor.

Smith, who was listed as homeless, was taken into custody on Vine Street.

She was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of criminal trespass and possession of marijuana.

One recent theft case was investigated by city officers.

• At 10:11 p.m. Oct. 27, Shane Dentler, 18, Greencastle, was issued a summons into court on a theft charge.

Officer Alec Pettit reported that Dentler allegedly used an incorrect bar code to make a purchase at the Walmart U-scan station.

Dentler reportedly used the bar code removed from a 94-cent shot glass to scan the price for what should have been a $178 tool kit.

In other GPD activity, a report on the Oct. 26 accident at Miller Asbury Apartments was made public.

According to Officer Brown’s report of the 4:22 a.m. incident, he was pursuing a older-model dark SUV which had passed him, reportedly doing at least 15 mph over the speed limit.

In a pursuit that reached 70 mph on Hanna Street and included evasive tactics through nearby parking lots, the driver eventually jumped out of the running vehicle after going through the Roban Apartments lot on the easts side of Bloomington Street. The running vehicle, a 1999 Oldsmobile Bravada, continued to roll forward until eventually crashing into the corner of the old Miller School building, now Miller Asbury Apartments.

The offender, who eluded police on foot, is described only generally as a six-foot-tall male with a stocky build.

No estimate of damage was made available on the report.

After running the plates on the vehicle, it came back as recently sold, police said. However, the description of who it had been sold to did not match that of the offender, making it possible that it was a stolen vehicle.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated five recent property-damage crashes.

• At 7:45 a.m. Tuesday, Janet E. Johnson, 67, Brazil, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2007 Dodge Caravan when she hit a deer.

• At 12:10 p.m. on Monday, Luke J. Skelton, 23, Cloverdale, was stopped on the eastbound side of U.S. 40 picking up trash from a home in a 2014 International Workstar garbage truck registered to Jack’s Trash Service.

Skelton told Deputy Deal he noticed a box truck approaching, not slowing down or changing lanes. Before Skelton could move his truck, the box truck had collided with the left rear corner of his truck.

Shaun D. Dupree, 40, Indianapolis, was eastbound in the 2018 Freightliner M2 100 registered to Caruso Inc. He told Deal he tried to swerve to avoid the trash truck, but could not do so.

Following the collision, Dupree’s truck continued eastbound and left the road, where it rolled onto its side.

Neither driver was injured.

The box truck was towed.

Deal estimated damage at $50,000-$100,000.

• At 6:07 a.m. Monday, Jonathan L. Browning, 49, Brazil, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2014 Ford Escape when he hit a deer.

• At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29, Shelby D. Neace, 17, Cloverdale, was attempting to turn onto northbound U.S. 231 from Mill Street in Cloverdale, driving a 2005 Chrysler Sebring. Kenneth A. Rock, 62, Spencer, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2017 Chevrolet Trax.

Neace told Deputy Freeman she saw a truck turning onto Mill Street but did not notice Rock’s vehicle behind, so she pulled out.

In doing so, Neace struck the front driver’s side of Rock’s vehicle.

Freeman estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
