A 42-year-old Greencastle woman died when she was struck by a car early Saturday morning.

Kristy L. Sparks was in the middle of the westbound lane of State Road 240 when she was hit before sunrise in front of Crown Equipment.

Responders were called to the scene at approximately 5:40 a.m. for a pedestrian struck by a westbound driver.

Trevor Begeman, 26, Danville, was westbound in a 2017 Nissan Altima.

With Sparks walking in the center of the road and the darkness of the night, investigators found that Begeman did not see Sparks until it was too late.

Deputy Coroner Todd Zeiner told the Banner Graphic that Sparks died of blunt force trauma to the head and chest.

Toxicology results for the victim are still pending.

Police do not believe Begeman was under the influence of any substances.

Officer Jared McDaniel investigated the accident, with assistance from fellow GPD officers Alec Pettit, Brad Hiatt and Nick Eastham, as well as Deputy Kyle Lee of the Putnam County Sheriff’s office.

Putnam County EMS and the Greencastle Fire Department also assisted.
