Master Gardener plant auction set for Saturday, May 1

The seventh-annual Putnam County Master Gardener Plant Auction will be held Saturday, May 1 at 10 a.m. at the goat barn at the Putnam County Fairgrounds.

Preview is set for 9:15 a.m. with the auction starting at 10 am. Flowers, ornamentals, tress, bushes and houseplants will be auctioned. In addition, donated garden and garden-related items normally found at the Garden Shed (at the March Garden Fair) will be available for sale.

The plants are donated by various local businesses and from the Putnam County Master Gardeners’ own gardens. If you have any plants you would like to donate to the auction, contact the Purdue Extension office at 653-8411.

In light of COVID-19, it is asked that individuals please pre-register to attend this event. This will allow monitoring of attendance and help accommodate any capacity/attendance limitations based on ISDH and county metrics data/advisory level colors. To pre-register, go to https://tinyurl.com/PutMGAuction.

Additionally, it is asked that individuals wear a face covering when they are unable to maintain six feet of social distancing. If you are not feeling well, have COVID-19 or you have recently been exposed to COVID-19, please do not attend.

In spite of all these adjustments due to COVID-19, this is a great opportunity for gardeners to get some outstanding bargains.

First off, the plants come from the gardens of friends and neighbors. This means that these plants will thrive in this area with our soil and our weather extremes. With water and a little care, these plants will continue to be successful when they’re transplanted to new local gardens.

Second, many of the plants at the auction were raised by Putnam County Master Gardeners — folks who are passionate about growing plants and who genuinely love to share their successes with other gardeners.

Finally, the plant auction is for a good cause. Proceeds from the auction fund scholarships for post-secondary students who plan to major in an agricultural or horticulture-related field of study.

Plan to spend the morning of May 1 with other plant lovers at the seventh-annual Master Gardener Plant Auction. Come check out the healthy, hardy and well-loved plants that will be auctioned off. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Jenna Nees at smith535@purdue.edu or 653-8411.
