Putnam County Cancer Center hosted a survivorship drive-through in honor of National Cancer Survivorship Day. Patients and survivors were invited to drive through and receive a box lunch and a bag of goodies to honor each of them and their battle with cancer.

“As much as we would have loved to get everyone in a room together, have a meal and recognize each of these amazing individuals, we opted for the drive through option,” PCH Director of Marketing Brooke Trissel said. “COVID-19 continues to be a concern, but we are hoping next year we can all have a meal together to honor these patients.”

National Cancer Survivors Day has been celebrated on the first Sunday in June for 34 years. According to the National Cancer Institute Office of Cancer Survivorship, a person is considered a cancer survivor at the time of cancer diagnosis and remains so for the remainder of his or her life.

Did you know that PCH Cancer Center has a survivorship program? The PCH program has developed and implemented a Facebook page with information regarding cancer screenings, nutrition tips, special events, mental health needs and other resources. The survivorship program is part of the Cancer Center’s national accreditation from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) to provide comprehensive cancer care close to home.

A special emphasis to follow up with patients post cancer treatment through oncology nurse phone calls and dietary and social worker follow-up has been a major goal of the PCH survivorship team. By following the patients from diagnosis, treatment and post treatment, the Putnam County Cancer Center is proud of the efforts of its oncology team, with special help from marketing, nutrition services and social work to provide continued support every step of a cancer survivor’s journey.
