Herschel Leon Hammond

Herschel Leon Hammond, son of Walter Glen Hammond and Iva May Davis Hammond, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2021.

Herschel was a 1945 graduate of Greencastle High School and served proudly in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Prudential Insurance.

He married Madonna May Grimes on July 24, 1950.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer Hammond (Wanda) and Charles Hammond (Josephine); and three sisters, Margaret Southwood, Mary Craig (Milan) and Charlotte Gram (James).

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Herschel loved spending time with family and friends. He and Madonna enjoyed traveling and playing golf.

Herschel had been a member of First Christian Church, Windy Hill Country Club, American Legion, VFW, Greencastle Elks Club, where he had served as Exalted Ruler, Masonic Lodge and Shriners.

Services will be 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home with visitation from 11 a.m. until time of service. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
