‘Guys and Dolls’ takes the stage at GHS this weekend

The romantic musical comedy “Guys and Dolls” will be presented at Greencastle High School’s Parker Auditorium this Friday, Nov. 19 and Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 21 at 2:30 p.m.

“Guys and Dolls” takes us from the bustle of Times Square, to the dance clubs of Havana, to the sewers of New York City as it demonstrates the great lengths to which a guy will go when he truly falls in love.

The musical is about a couple of big-city gamblers and the women who love them. It tells the overlapping stories of high-roller Sky Masterson (played by Carter Brown), who falls in love with mission worker Sarah Brown (Emily Gray) and lovable rapscallion Nathan Detroit (Joey Kleffman), engaged for 14 years to Miss Adelaide (Isabella Green), a headliner at the Hot Box Club.

The other characters in the musical include Arvide Abernathy (played by Daniel Hankee), Big Jule (Kendra Hanlon), General Cartwright (Kiana Hewitt), Nicely Nicely Johnson (Alice Howard), The Emcee (William Johnston), Harry the Horse (Dawson Lyons), Calvin (Zachary Martin), Lt. Brannigan (Rain Minartz), Ferguson (Hallie Rice), Allison (Katrina Schwab), Joey Biltmore (Collin Short), Benny Southwest (Ben Staggers) Vernon (Kamorah Stampley), Waiter (Brian Stewart) and Martha (Journey Wilson).

The ensemble includes Trenton Bright, Madysen Conley, William Johnston, Zachary Martin, Hallie Rice, Katrina Schwab, Collin Short, Kamorah Stampley, Brian Stewart and Journey Wilson.

Pit orchestra members are Annette Munoz, Zach Barron, Emma Smiley, Rudy Hagen, Eli Callahan, Bella Monnett, Dedee Schwomeyer, Campbell Benedix, Dorian Dowd, Logan Julian, Rebecca Terry and Blake Wilmot.

The crew behind the scenes helps make the show a success. Rebecca Hebb and Lia Lofaro serve as the stage managers. Other crew members include: Lighting crew: Hyrum Hale (director), Marleah Muncie and Michelle Morales. Sound crew: Ben Huff (director), Mya Weddle. Costumes: Mya Weddle (director). Make-up: Maria Serapio (co-director), Eleanore Shillings (co-director), Jadyn Wadler. Props masters: Rebecca Hebb, Lia Lofaro. Stage crew (building): Brook Bean, Carter Brown, Olivia Elkins, Bella Green, Joey Kleffman, Paul Lewis, Grace Long (director), Makayla Long, Dawson Lyons, Mylea Mangus and Madi Voorhis. “Guys and Doll” is based on the short stories of Damon Runyon. The book was written by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. The music and lyrics were written by Frank Loesser.

The show opened on Broadway in 1950 and was revived in 1976, 1992 and 2009. A movie adaptation starring Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Vivian Blaine was released in 1955.

The production is being directed by Mark Rawlins. Ross Hanson is the musical director and the set designer and builder is Amie Bailey. The choreographers are Sarah Armitage and Josh Bain. Hyrum Hale and Marleah Muncie serve as assistant student directors. Morgan Asher provides piano accompaniment.

All seats are $8 and may be purchased at the door. On Friday and Saturday the show starts at 7:30 p.m. (Doors open at 70). Sunday the show starts at 2:30 (Doors open at 2).
