QUINCY — Firefighters from three Putnam County volunteer fire departments went out on a large barn fire which occurred on U.S. 231 in Owen County Friday evening.

At about 8:50 p.m., the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the blaze, which was located not far south of the Millgrove Country Mart. The barn was engulfed upon arrival with the roof having collapsed.

Cloverdale Fire responded with two engines and a tanker. Being a working fire which required more apparatus and manpower, tankers from the Reelsville and Jefferson Township volunteers also came. The Cataract and Gosport volunteer departments also assisted with tankers and personnel.

While it covered Taylor Township in Owen County, Cloverdale Fire initially requested for the Greencastle Fire Department to watch its station. As such, Greencastle personnel advised they were short. However, other Cloverdale personnel were then able to cover.

Cloverdale Fire Chief Kerry Shepherd told the Banner Graphic that firefighters were on the scene for about three hours and used about 7,000 gallons. The barn and its contents were a total loss.
