Other changes coming for city trash, recycling

Thursday, January 20, 2022

With the City of Greencastle having already agreed to a new trash and recycling contract with Republic Services, the City Council has learned about some additional aspects of the new program set to start in March.

City Clerk-Treasurer Lynda Dunbar announced at the January City Council meeting that recycling day is going to change and “be easier” for residents.

A letter from Republic is coming in the mail, Dunbar said, that will spell out how a homeowner’s trash and recycling toters will be set out on the same day of the week. Some city residents currently have this luxury but it will be citywide when the new contract takes effect March 1.

“It will still be weekly for trash,” Dunbar said, “and every other week for recycling. But the recycling toter will be set out the same as trash day.”

In adopting Ordinance 2021-16 on second and final reading at its January meeting, the Council set in motion the new rate of $16.50 per month beginning March 1 and continuing through Feb. 28, 2023.

Then each succeeding March 1, from 2023 through 2025, the trash and recycling rate will rise to $17, then $17.50, and then $17.75 through the end of the contract on Feb. 28, 2026.

While that progression was spelled out in recent discussions as the Board of Works awarded the contract to Republic, the Council also learned that city residents whose trash exceeds their weekly toter capacity can purchase stickers for $2 each to attach to the extra trash bags they set out.

Responding to Councilman Dave Murray’s question, City Attorney Laurie Hardwick said the stickers will be available at City Hall or through Republic Services.

Additional refuse toters and additional recycling toters are also available to residents for $5 more per month.

  • I don't think it is fair for all residents to pay for recycling, when in fact they don't recycle. I don't want to pay for something I don't do!! If I only have trash picked up, then that is what I should pay for.

No one forces residents to put their trash at the curb either. But everyone pays for the service. It's part of living in community.

  • I agree with Rainbow6....why am I paying for something I don't do?? What happened to the suggestion that recycling could be an option that a household could choose? I wish I could just opt out of the whole trash/recycling "situation" that the city offers!!!

  • Yeah, I don't drive in Northern Putnam County; why should I have to pay to maintain the roads there? (Sarcasm)

Rainbow - you are looking at it wrong.

You aren't paying for recycling... you are paying for trash pickup.

    The recycling is free.

Per the article, the fee is for "trash & recycling" as a combined cost with no itemization.

If you don't want to put out recycling...don't put out recycling. It could be an opportunity to lessen your environmental footprint by trying to live your life with less waste overall.

  • Resident #10549: I'm curious what you would do with your trash if you didn't have pick-up. Toss it into the holler?

  • I love how people ask a question yet then provide a shaming answer. Not sure how that prompts an honest conversation. It does show one party assuming the worst in another person rather than allowing an excellent question to move forward.

  • Is "shaming" your new word now beg? Did you learn that over the weekend?
