Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Bradly K. Ames, 62, Fillmore, was northbound on County Road 550 East just north of County Road 200 North in a 2007 Freightliner Columbia registered to Ames 4K Farms.

Ames told Deputy Josh Boller that after getting through two corners, he was checking his rear view mirror. By the time he looked forward, his right front tire was in the ditch. He tried to steer out, but hit a Hendricks Power pole, causing extensive damage to the tractor cab.

The tractor and trailer then flipped onto their sides.

Ames was not injured in the crash.

The truck had to be towed. Boller estimated damage at $50,000-$100,000.

• At 6:28 p.m. on Tuesday, Zachary Minnick, 35, Quincy, was attempting to leave the Marathon Station at U.S. 231 and U.S. 40 in a 2013 GMC Sierra.

Minnick told Deputy Tanner Brown that southbound vehicles were stopped and he had enough room to pull across traffic and into the northbound lane. He said that has he was crossing the southbound lane, he did not see any approaching headlights in the lane to turn east.

However, as he attempted to cross the turn lane, his truck collided with a southbound 204 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Melissa Lancaster, 53, Greencastle.

Lancaster told Brown that as she was driving southbound, Minnick’s vehicle suddenly pulled in front of her and she could not avoid a crash.

Both vehicles were towed. Brown estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 5:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Starlit D. Brann, 55, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 325 West, attempting to turn left, with her turn signal activated, onto County Road 450 South in a 2010 Ford F-150.

Brann told Cpl. Brian Helmer that as she was turning, she was struck in the left rear by a Jack’s Trash truck. The impact pushed Brann’s pickup into the ditch.

Austin M. Gray, 23, Greencastle, told Helmer he was southbound in the 2007 Freightliner M2 registered to Jack’s Trash. He said an unidentified vehicle was between his truck and Brann’s pickup. As Brann was braking to turn left, so did the vehicle in the middle. Gray, however, said he could not get his truck to slow down fast enough to avoid a collision with the middle vehicle. He instead took evasive action and turned left to avoid the collision, driving partially into a yard north of the intersection before colliding with the pickup.

The driver of the middle car left the scene before Helmer’s arrival.

Neither driver needed medical attention. Once Brann’s truck was pulled form the ditch, both were driven from the scene.

Helmer estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 3, Kris D. Nelson, 54, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 600 South in a 2016 GMC Sierra.

Nelson told Maj. Dwight Simmons that he encountered a northbound vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on the snow-covered road, so he attempted to get over to the left. In doing so, Nelson’s truck was pulled into the ditch, where it made contact with a fence, causing extensive damage to the driver’s side.

Nelson was able to drive his truck from the scene.

The other vehicle, which did not stop, was described as a white Dodge Ram with a camper shell.

Simmons estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.
