County Jail

Four people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Sunday

• At 5:34 p.m. Mary E. Walker, 38, Terre Haute, was lodged at the jail for auto theft.

Saturday

• At 11:45 p.m. Cody A. Airhart, 32, Indianapolis, was taken into custody for driving with a suspended license.

• At 11:09 a.m. Brandon A. McCarthy, 27, Speedway, was housed at the jail for possession of marijuana and driving with a suspended license.

• At 4:19 a.m. Patricia A. Colantonio, 30, Greencastle, was booked in for theft.

City Police

Two people were arrested recently by Greencastle City Police officers

• At 11:02 p.m. Friday, Dwight G. Hill, 65, Fillmore, was arrested by Sgt. Brad Hiatt after he reportedly left the scene of a property-damage accident at the parking lot of 3G Bowl on South Jackson Street.

Hill, who was arrested about two hours later on County Road 50 North, registered a blood-alcohol concentration of .138 percent under PBT testing.

He was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction and leaving the scene of an accident.

The accident resulted in damage estimated at $1,000-$2,500 as Hill’s 2007 Chevrolet Silverado struck a parked 2015 Chevrolet Silverado owned by Terry Wehr and left the scene.

The Wehr truck sustained damage to the rear driver’s side door, while Hill’s vehicle had damage to the driver’s side tailgate area.

• At 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dereck A. Burchett, 43, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer Luke Brown.

Lodged in the Putnam County Jail, Burchett is facing charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia as well as for a Putnam County warrant with an original charge of possession of methamphetamine.

While Burchett was being processed for arrest, it was also discovered that he had methamphetamine and paraphernalia on him at the time.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 8:16 p.m. on Sunday, Jason A. Parker, 25, Monrovia, was westbound on State Road 42 in a 2014 Ford Escape when he hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

•At 6:14 p.m. on Saturday, Aydan K. Patrick, 17, Greencastle, was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2000 Toyota Avalon.

Patrick told Deputy Josh Deal he was following another vehicle that came to a stop. Due to the sun in his eyes, Patrick did not see the brake lights immediately. However, in order to avoid the collision, he swerved off the road and hit a sign.

The vehicle had to be towed. Deal estimated at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 8 a.m. on Friday, Mark F. Durr, 59, Sheridan, was westbound on State Road 240 in a 2020 Ford Explorer. Devyn M. Newton, 21, Danville, was also westbound in a 2003 Honda CR-V.

Newton told Deputy Todd Hopkins she was following Durr, who began to slow down and then “suddenly stopped.” Her vehicle then rear-ended his, causing her to swerve into the ditch on the north side of the road, where the vehicle rolled onto its passenger side and came to stop in a driveway.

Durr told Hopkins he had slowed down to turn into his place of employment when he was rear-ended.

Newton was helped from her vehicle by passersby. She suffered a bloody nose and was evaluated by Putnam County EMS, but declined transport to the hospital. Durr was uninjured.

Both vehicles were towed. Hopkins, assisted by Deputy Tanner Brown, estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 5:44 a.m. on Friday, Caitlyn Gracia, 28, Lebanon, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2010 Dodge Caliber when she hit a deer.

Deputy Brown estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to eight incidents recently:

• At 9:18 p.m. on Thursday, GFD was dispatched to 109 W. Hanna St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 9:22 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 9:26 p.m.

•At 3:45 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to 506 W. Columbia St. for a gas leak. Firefighters arrived at 3:47 and were advised by the homeowner that a gas line was struck in replacing a water line. The property was monitored and the leak was secured. GFD went back into service at 5:22 p.m.

• At 7:51 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Kappa Alpha Theta on the DePauw University campus for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 7:56 and could not determine a cause for the alarm. The detector head was cleaned and the alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 8:09 p.m.

• At 8:22 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to the apartments at 330 Greenwood Ave. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 8:27 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 8:45 p.m.

• At 2:44 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to Sigma Alpha Epsilon on the DePauw University campus for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 2:48 and determined the alarm was due to steam from a shower. The detector head was cleaned and the alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 3 p.m.

• At 4:13 a.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to 1006 Castlebury Dr. for a gas spill. Firefighters arrived at 4:22 and cleaned up the fuel from the road. GFD went back into service at 4:31 a.m.

• At 2:10 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to Sigma Alpha Epsilon on the DePauw University campus for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 2:14 and determined that the alarm was activated again due to steam from a shower. While the alarm was reset, the system showed multiple trouble codes. It was advised that the system would be repaired. GFD went back into service at 2:23 p.m.

• At 2:09 p.m. on Monday, GFD was dispatched to 486 Glenview Dr. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 2:16 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The resident was working on resetting the alarm. GFD went back into service at 2:21 p.m.

Additionally, GFD recently performed five medical assists, had one disregard and found no incident on one run.
