North Putnam, South Putnam split middle school county swim titles

After topping both North Putnam and Greencastle, South Putnam celebrates its middle school girls’ swimming Putnam County championship. A change of schedules earlier in the season meant Tuesday night became the Putnam County Middle School Swim Meet at South Putnam.

The Eagles won a thrilling girls’ meet over North Putnam 252-240 while the Cougars would take a comfortable win in the boys’ meet 286-171 over the hosts. Greencastle finished third in both meets, tallying 80 points in the girls’ meet and 118 in the boys’ meet.

North Putnam started with an advantage of having a diver with Barbie Fuchs winning the competition with a score of 121.60.

South Putnam answered by winning the 200 medley relay behind the team of Elise Kendall, Bella Fanning, Josey Helton and Victoria Paige in 2:28.90.

Bailie Pride won the 200 free for the Cougars in 2:35.80 while Kendall won the 100 IM in 1:20.78 for the Eagles.

Fuchs took to the pool to pick up a win in the 50 free in 29.30 while Addie Jones added a win for North Putnam in the 50 fly in 38.43.

Kendall added a third win in the 100 free in 1:09.02 while Pride answered by winning the 400 free in 5:45.37.

South Putnam won its second relay of the night as Fanning, Helton, Kendall and Molly Trammell won the 200 free relay in 2:09.65 followed by a wins from Bailey Patterson in the 100 back in 1:33.30 and Fanning in the 100 breaststroke in 1:27.58.

North Putnam would claim the final even in the 400 free relay through Jones, Fuchs, Pride, and Saylor Braeger in 4:39.10 but were just behind the hosts in the team race at the end of the meet.

The Cougars would fare better in the boys’ meet, getting a trio of early wins as Dakota Bowen won the diving competition with a score of 93.10, Owen Query, Brayden Chew, Beckett Braeger and Kolten Hoops won the 200 medley relay in 2:08.90 and Trentin Asher won the 200 free in 2:32.47.

South Putnam’s Jonah Taylor won the 100 IM in 1:06.51 before Braeger led a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 free for the Cougars with a winning time of 29.50 and bagged the 50 fly in 30.90.

Hoops picked up the 100 free in 1:06.37 while James Thomas won the 400 free in 5:33.57 to continue North Putnam’s solid meet.

The Eagles picked up the 200 free relay behind Taylor, Hayden Meredith, Gunner Roach and Logan Johnson in 2:00.12 before Query won the 100 back in 1:23.00.

Taylor came back to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.28 while the Cougars closed the meet with a dominant win in the 400 free relay behind Braeger, Hoops, Asher and Chew in 4:15.91, over a minute in front of second place.2022 MS Putnam County - 3/15/2022
