Howard Martin Tippin

Sunday, March 20, 2022

Howard Martin Tippin, 85, was born July 21, 1936, in Salem, Ind. He moved with his family to a farm just south of Morton and lived most his life in Putnam County until his death on Friday, March 18, 2022.

He graduated from Bainbridge High School and went into farming. When Van Bibber Lake began to develop adjacent to his farm, Howard became involved with the development of the lake, which led to a career of over 40 years in facilities management.

Howard was known for his quick wit and common sense logic when addressing issues. One of the residents living at the lake captured his level of community service with the comment, “That Howard Tippin is the ‘workingest’ man I have ever seen!”

He was known for his fast pitch in softball in his younger days. He sang gospel throughout his life, and the rafters would rattle at Somerset Christian Church. Howard also enjoyed attending high school sporting events, especially when his kids were involved. One of the ways he showed his love was by making time to attend and support his kids. He was a quiet, calm and lived values of hard work, perseverance and honesty.

Survivors include his wife, Marie; his children Becky Tippin, Jim (Janet) Tippin, David (Sheryl) Tippin, Mike (Lilliana) Tippin, Heather (Jerod) Hohenberger, Tippany (Andrew) Crosley and Dustin Tippin; five siblings; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, James and Nellie Tippin, and his three older siblings.

A memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 at Whitaker Funeral Home in Cloverdale. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m.
