Take the Long Way

Monday, March 21, 2022
Long in the works as a federal aid bridge project, the replacement of Bridge 276, which carries Saddle Club Road (County Road 400 West) over the CSX Railroad in Madison Township is set to begin soon. The road closure began late last week and is set to continue for 160 days, a range that could be extended. Built in 1908, the bridge has appeared to be in disrepair for decades, but has only in recent years reached a state in which its replacement is necessary.

  • Most federal-aid projects require a benefit/cost ratio assessment. I fail to see how this multi-million $ bridge benefits anyone other than the Fat Lab owners. Most of the other bridges similar to this one are simply closed off permanently.

  • The County looked at closing the bridge permanently and was told they could not because the other way out was a Flood Zone. The bridge has to be replaced and since the bridge goes over a railroad there is no choice but to go through Federal Aid.

  • Thanks Rick for the explanation. Makes sense to me now.
