Fuhrman seeks fourth term on County Council

I want to thank the good people of northern Putnam County for entrusting me to monitor the county finances for the past 12 years. If you are so inclined, I ask to continue this for another four years.

My background is rich, but relatable to each and every one of you. I graduated high school early and enlisted as a U.S. Marine at the age of 17, understanding the call during the Vietnam War. I chose to volunteer as quickly as possible and though never in country, I realized my journey through life would always include public service. I say this not to boast, but to show how willing I have been to serve my community at the earliest possible age.

After approximately six years in the Marine Corps and achieving the rank of staff sergeant, I was selected to become an officer through the commissioning program through college. I applied for and was accepted at Purdue University and studied engineering.

After successfully graduating from PU and participating in historical events such as the Purdue Grand Prix, I was commissioned as an officer in the Marine Corps and eventually achieved the rank of captain prior to retirement at 20 years.

I became a father to four exceptional children who are exceeding my dreams for them. My eldest son, Zach, is an Iraq War Marine veteran and a police officer in Indiana. Samantha is an aeronautical engineer and masters graduate from Purdue. She is a contractor for the U.S. Navy and a spouse to a naval officer. Sarah is a current Purdue student and Seth, aka Biscuit, is currently a student at NPHS.

Since 2010, Putnam County has dramatically improved its financial standing. We stand 29th (Low=Good) of 92 counties in overall tax load. Our debt is minimal and significantly lower than the surrounding counties.

While the Council does not control all county funds, according to the latest Indiana State government audit, the areas we do control are in superior shape.

The role of councilman is serious business, as our fund balance hovers at approximately $26-29 million. As president of our Council, it is incumbent on me to shepherd the myriad demands, requests and proposals to the best outcome for Putnam County.

I take this position seriously because next year will be a challenge as world events and inflation will demand increased scrutiny of budget line items. I have the experience and required skills to see the county budget through this upcoming difficulty.

On a personal note, I have saved the county over $10,000 a year by not taking the health insurance package. I do not feel a part-time office holder should expect full-time benefits. Though completely legal and optional, I challenge my opponent to vow the same to our constituents.

There are a few individual projects that should be addressed.

1. A county annex/storage facility to unload the courthouse.

2. Reestablishing our seven-year road plan.

3. County broadband coverage.

4. Enhance EMS and first responder capabilities.
