Robinson holds Eagles silent as Mustangs roll to win

The South Putnam Eagles could not generate enough offense against the Edgewood Mustangs in a Western Indiana Conference softball game at Dalton Field on Wednesday evening. The visiting Mustangs played flawless defense and rode a three-hit shutout by junior pitcher Jaylen Robinson to a 7-0 victory over the Eagles.

The Mustangs used a five-run third and took advantage of some Eagle errors to get their seven runs, while South Putnam rarely threatened as Robinson struck out six South batters and her teammates provided great support without committing an error.

The loss dropped South Putnam to 4-9 on the season and 2-4 in WIC action. Edgewood improved to 5-9 with a 3-2 mark in conference play.

The two teams played a scoreless first two innings. Edgewood placed a runner on base in each inning, but the Eagles threw out a Mustang stealing in the first and stranded a runner at first in the second. South managed to get a Sabrina Leonard single in the second but could not get her around to score.

Edgewood broke through against the Eagles in the third inning. A leadoff single by Callie Winzeler and an Eagle error set the stage. A walked batter followed by back-to-back singles by Savanna Monroe and Cortney Hawkins and an RBI groundout by Chloe Helms gave the Mustangs a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third. The Eagles could not take advantage of a two-out double by Chloe Pistelli and the score remained 5-0 after three innings.

Both teams were scoreless in the fourth inning despite Leonard giving the Eagles a scoring opportunity with a one-out triple. Edgewood would then add another run in the fifth inning. A leadoff single and an Eagle error put a runner on third and a sacrifice fly by Helms gave the Mustangs another run. Leonard would work her way out of a jam though as with bases loaded, she induced two ground ball outs to end the inning and limit the damage.

Edgewood loaded the bases again in the sixth, but again could not turn the inning into much as the Eagles held them scoreless, but Robinson put the Eagles down in order in the bottom of the inning.

The Mustangs picked up their final run in the top of the seventh as Meleah Vest opened with a single and would eventually score on an Alayna Flynn sacrifice fly and South would go down in order in its final at-bat.

Edgewood supported Robinson’s stellar pitching performance with a three-hit game by Monroe while Hamilton and Vest had a pair of hits.

South’s Leonard had a pair of hits, including a triple, while Chloe Pistelli had a double.

The Eagles will stay at home for their next game on Friday against the North Central Thunderbirds in a non-conference game.
