Tiger Cub offense falls short against Braves, Bulldogs

The Greencastle Tiger Cub baseball team could only scratch out four hits and two runs as it fell to the visiting Indian Creek Braves 5-2 in Western Indiana Conference action.

The Braves were the first to break through in the top of the second inning. A lead off double off the bat of Blayden Mann. Mann would score on a fielding error later in the inning. They would add another in the third, this a double from Carter Modlin set the table. He too would score after an error to make it 2-0.

Indian Creek added two more in the fifth. Drew Gavin reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on a throwing error. Modlin would bring him home with a single and later score on an RBI groundout.

Greencastle finally got on the board in the fifth. Owen Huff led off the inning with a single. Kiefer Wilson reached on a throwing error and Ben Huff would bring in Owen with an RBI single.

Both teams traded runs in the sixth as scoring was at a premium. Indian Creek went to the bullpen to close out the game for a 5-2 victory. Arjun Lothe picked up the win for the Braves, while Kiefer Wilson suffered the loss. Greencastle falls to 10-9 on the season and the Indian Creek moves to 8-6.

The Monrovia Bulldogs softball team used a five run fourth inning and three home runs to outlast the Greencastle Tiger Cubs 6-4 Monday evening in a non-conference matchup.

Greencastle scratched out a run in the bottom of the first. Elise Lausee walked and stole second. Sidney Lantzy singled, advancing Lausee, who then scored as a throw went errant and the Cubs led 1-0.

Monrovia’s big inning was the fourth. A lead off single was followed by a two run homer off the bat of Harley Mobley. Emery Newlin was hit by a pitch and Taylor Clipper followed that with a two run shot of her own. They would get one more later in the inning to take a 5-1 lead.

Greencastle answered right back. Emma West reached on an error, Evelyn Briones doubled to bring in West and Allie Beaman singled to score Briones to cut the lead to 5-3.

The Tiger Cubs got one more in sixth. West led off with a single, Briones singled and Beaman drove in West with a single of her own. The rally ended there though as the Bulldogs tacked on a solo home run in the seventh from Athena McGinnis to take the 6-4 win.

Beaman took the loss for the Tiger Cubs, who fall to 6-9 on the season. Mattocks got the win for the Bulldogs who are now 7-4 on the campaign.

The Tiger Cubs blanked the Bulldogs Monday night with Keifer Wilson and Treyten Clark combining for seven innings of perfect pitching, the former pitching five innings and striking out 13 while the latter struck out four in two innings.

Chase Carrington had two hits and drove in two runs while Clark and DJ Wells had a double and a run driven in each.

Greencastle did not have as much success the following night against the Mustangs as the hosts scored nine runs in the first four innings to win a WIC contest.

Wilson was 3-of-4 at the plate, hitting a home run, while driving in four runs. Wells and Carrington drove in a run each.

Clark took the loss, giving up six hits and seven runs in three innings of work. Ben Huff pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and two runs, walking and striking out two, while Wells struck out both batters he faced.

South Vermillion 8, Cloverdale 0

The Clover bats were held to three this as the Wildcats scored eight runs on nine hits.

Drake Hoffa, Brady Koosman and Isaac Maldonado recorded singles during Monday’s game. Levi Hilton took the loss on the mound, giving up eight hits, four walks and seven runs in four innings of work. Koosman pitched two innings, giving up a hit and a run while striking out two.

Softball

Edgewood 8, Greencastle 7

Both teams had solid offense through four innings before the game turned into a pitcher’s duel for the final three innings, one the Mustangs were happy to see out Tuesday night.

Emma West had three doubles and drove in two runs while Olivia Richardville had two RBIs and Evelyn Briones, Makenzie Epley and Elise Lausee drove in runs.

Evelyn Briones took the loss, giving up three hits, four walks and two runs in 3 1/3 innings. Haley Iseman started the game, giving up four hits and six walks while allowing six runs.

Wednesday, the Tiger Cubs scored three runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to turn around a 6-1 deficit.

Epley was 4-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs on the night. Sidney Lantz was 3-for-4 with a double and triple, scoring three times and driving in a run. West drove in two runs while Lausee and Emma Hunter drove in a run each.

Iseman took the win, throwing five innings, giving up three hits and two runs. Allie Beaman started, giving up four hits and four runs in two innings of work.

Eminence 6, South Putnam 5

South Putnam 2, Brown County 1

The Eels scored in the bottom of the seventh to eek out a win over the Eagles, who had tied the game in the sixth with three runs, Monday night.

Sabrina Leonard and Payton Freeman drove in a pair of runs each while Faith Will plated the other South Putnam run.

Leonard took the loss in the circle, allowing six runs on 12 hits while striking out four.

Wednesday, the Eagles defeated their counterparts from Brown County after Leonard was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game in the third inning before Joslyn Picher singled home Danae Cline in the fifth inning.

Leonard got the win, combining with Jaicee Jackson to no-hit the visiting Eagles. The former tossed six scoreless innings, striking out eight.

Clay City 11, Cloverdale 0 (5)

Veronica Carter and Erin Johnson managed singles in the shoutout loss to the Eels Monday night.

Abby Helton took the loss, giving up eight hits and three walks, allowing seven runs in three innings of work with a pair of strikeouts.

North Putnam 14, Ind. Marlins 9

The Cougars fell behind in the sixth after giving up four runs but responded with eight in reply to pick up the win Monday night.

Emma Williams, Kyla Willis and Lexi Daigle drove in three runs each with Karyssa Miller plating two more and Samie Hoops, Brilye Schmitz and Grace Kinkead each getting a run across. Kinkead was 4-for-4 at the plate while Williams had three hits. Schmitz and Daigle both hit home runs.

Kyndal Brewer took the win after the rally, tossing three innings while giving up eight hits and five runs while striking out four. Kinkead started and exited with the lead, pitching four innings, giving up six hits and four runs.

The Tiger Cubs took down the Warriors at Twin Bridges Monday afternoon with Lathan Worman earning medalist honors with a round of 43, followed by Tyler Rodgers on 45, Vincent Martoglio on 50 and Zane Huber on 51. Clark Shafer shot 54 while Dylan Barcus carded a 66.

Wednesday a consistent Mountie squad bettered Greencastle at Crawfordsville CC. Martoglio, Worman and Huber all shot 42 while Shafer carded a 47. Rodgers posted a round of 50 while Barcus shot 58.
