Heavy rain during the afternoon saw Wednesday’s opening round of the IHSAA Greencastle Girls’ Tennis Sectional moved to DePauw University’s Indoor Tennis Center.

Under the lights, in a different manner of speaking, the host Tiger Cubs made quick work of South Putnam, advancing to the semifinal round with a 5-0 sweep of the Eagles.

“(South Putnam) improved but we improved more,” Greencastle head coach Annette Munoz said about facing the Eagles for a second time, the first a 5-0 win on April 12. “They were good players and good sports; it’s always good to play girls that care about the game.

“They’re coached well by (South Putnam head coach Jonnie Briones) and played until the end, so they were a good team to face.”

A sweep of the singles matches made Greencastle’s advance certain as Maddie Landry defeated Brinlee Clark at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0 while Caroline Gooch defeated Ava Watson at No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-1 and Sophie Riggle defeated Catherine Hodge at No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-0.

South Putnam provided more fight in the doubles matches as Sydnee Boswell and Alie Newby pushed Liberty Amis and Bella Monnett hard for the first set at No. 1 doubles, ultimately coming up short as the Tiger Cub pair won in two sets 7-5, 6-1.

Kylie Arnold and Kaley Hodges made a stronger showing in the second set after a quick first set but couldn’t find a needed break and fell 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles to Savannah Black and Addison Fowler as the hosts completed the sweep to advance in the sectional.

Greencastle faces Northview Thursday night, one of two opponents in the sectional the Tiger Cubs lost 3-2 against, the Knights winning the first meeting on April 18.

“We are excited to play Northview,” Munoz said “We feel our team has developed throughout the season and had a stronger second half of the season to gear up for this.

“We want to win at home and win two sectionals in a row. Our girls are more determined and focused now than they were at the beginning of the season.”
