Joel Karabo Elliott

Joel Karabo Elliott is an American / South African multi-instrumentalist, steward of the global ensemble Roots Grown Deep, and composer of what he terms “musical ecology”. He is this week’s featured performer in the Greencastle Summer Music Festival, a series of free indoor concerts held Wednesdays at 7:30pm in the air-conditioned sanctuary of Gobin Church.

“Last week’s multi-genre opening concert had a huge audience and a standing ovation,” says Eric Edberg, the festival’s founding artistic and executive director. “I love Joel’s amazingly versatile and creative music making, and am excited for our community to experience his unique musical gifts.”

For this performance, Joel will be sharing an intimate solo concert full of poetry, stories, and music which he guides with guitar, piano, trombone, and his versatile, improvisational voice. Get ready to travel without moving between the mountains, rivers and villages of southern Africa, the Caribbean and North America, as he weaves together stories of his journey in relationship with community and nature on two continents. Joel is an ‘06 DePauw graduate of the School of Music, History department and Honor Scholar program. The festival, which has been presenting concerts of “friends making music for friends” since 2005, is funded by individual donors, a grant from the Putnam County Convention and Visitors Bureau, an endowment at the Putnam County Community Foundation, and the Inn at DePauw, host for the festival’s out-of-town performers.

Next week’s performers are Percussion Group DePauw, including Greencastle residents Ming-Hui Kuo and Ben Hogan, followed by the cello and piano Duo Cantabile on June 22. The full schedule can be found online at greencastlemusic.org.
