Cataract Falls gatehouse damaged in fire Sunday

CATARACT — The gatehouse at the entrance of Cataract Falls State Recreation Area was heavily damaged in an early-morning fire Sunday.

The Cataract Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched for the incident at about 5:25 a.m. and found the structure wooden structure fully involved.

While the Cataract volunteers extinguished the fire after conducting an interior attack and pulling two lines, the Poland Volunteer Fire Department arrived later and assisted with overhaul.

The Owen County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office were also at the scene.

The park was closed as of Sunday.

Indiana State Parks stated in a Facebook post that the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Both Cataract Falls and Lieber State Recreation Area are on the same DNR property that centers on Cagles Mill Lake.
