PUTNAMVILLE — A semi driver was killed in a fiery incident on Interstate 70 between Cloverdale and Brazil Sunday morning.

First responders were initially dispatched to the area of the 36-mile marker westbound at about 8:25 a.m. for a vehicle fire with explosions. With the whole tractor-trailer resting on its side in the median, the cab was fully engulfed when the Cloverdale Township Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene.

While Cloverdale Township VFD responded with engines, the Jefferson Township and Reelsville volunteer fire departments came with tankers and assisted with extinguishing the blaze. Absorbent was also put down due to a large diesel spillage.

The left guardrail was twisted in the impact and blocked the roadway until firefighters cut it up and removed it. Traffic was backed up until a lane was opened along the right shoulder.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office initially diverted traffic off of the interstate onto U.S. 231, as well as maintained the State Road 243 ramp for emergency crews.

Jefferson Township VFD was on the way back to its station by 10 a.m., while Reelsville VFD went back into service at about 10:30 a.m.

The Cloverdale firefighters were back in service by noon. Meanwhile, the Cataract Volunteer Fire Department out of Owen County covered its station.

It has been determined that the tractor-trailer, which was hauling three camper trailers, was traveling in the driving lane when it crossed over, struck the guardrail and overturned. The tractor-trailer then caught fire, killing the driver.

It is unknown at this time what led to the tractor-trailer crossing the roadway. However, drugs and alcohol are not believed to be contributing factors.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Matt Ames told the Banner Graphic that while the driver’s family has been notified, the Putnam County Coroner’s Office is to perform an autopsy and make a positive identification.

Indiana State Police Trooper Colton Maynor has led the preliminary investigation into the incident.

Putnam County EMS and the Indiana Department of Transportation, which provided directional arrows, also responded. Meanwhile, Curtis Wrecker was called to stabilize the rig.

The westbound lane was completely reopened by 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Story will be updated when more details become available.

  • I fear there are a lot of new and inexperienced drivers on our highways.
