MOUNT MERIDIAN — An Indianapolis man is dead after fleeing from Hendricks County police on Saturday and ultimately crashing in eastern Putnam County.

Dominique Jackson, 32, died when the Chevrolet Malibu he was driving left U.S. 40 near County Road 550 East, ultimately rolling and catching fire.

The incident began more than 20 miles to the east in Plainfield, when the police were notified of a possible intoxicated or impaired driver westbound on Main Street (U.S. 40) near Clarks Road, according to a release from the department.

The vehicle was reportedly driving erratically and “all over the roadway.”

A Plainfield Police officer observed the vehicle traveling westbound while swerving and committing traffic violations.

Activating his emergency lights, the officer conducted a traffic stop at U.S. 40 and Cartersburg Road.

As officers approached the vehicle, they noted paint transfer from a recent crash, leading them to believe the vehicle may have also been involved in a recent hit-and-run crash.

The driver, who was the sole occupant, was requested to exit the vehicle. Instead, he disregarded the request and fled the scene.

Officers pursued westbound for about 17 miles until the vehicle left the road and crashed.

According to Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Cpl. Scott Ducker, a vehicle fire resulting from the crash had been extinguished shortly after 2:30 p.m.

Indiana State Police completed the accident reconstruction and is conducting an investigation of the crash.
