PUTNAMVILLE — A hike led by local environmentalist John Garner will be held at Deer Creek Fish and Wildlife Area this Saturday, July 9 at 9 a.m.

The hike will visit sunflower plantings on the property, however they will not be in full bloom due to the wet spring. Afterward, the group will discuss what fish and wildlife areas offer to nature lovers.

Possession of the land that comprises Deer Creek began in 2010 with a transfer of 1,962 acres from Putnamville Correctional Facility to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ fish and wildlife division. Several more parcels were then added, bringing the current total to 2,175 acres. A four-acre pond is on the north portion.

The property features hunting, fishing and hiking over rolling agricultural land and mature oak-hickory woods. An upland and forested habitat, shallow impoundments and Deer Creek attract a wide variety of birds and wildlife, and wild berries, nuts and mushrooms may be gathered at times which do not conflict with turkey hunting season.

To get to the property, turn north off U.S. 40 near the Putnamville prison. After entering the area, continue north to the pond.
