Fair begins Friday with new schedule

Thursday, July 21, 2022
The Putnam County Fair may not officially begin until Friday, but the fairgrounds is already abuzz with activity on Tuesday, as 4-H and Adult Open Class projects were being turned in, and (from left) Jeff Kiger, Brian Carrington and Ken Carrington are assembling the familiar Bainbridge Lions Club putt-putt booth.

The same, yet different.

Housed in all the same fairgrounds environs, the 2022 edition of the Putnam County 4-H Fair commences Friday.

However, some familiar elements — namely certain livestock shows — will take on new dates and times.

First on the list is the 4-H llama and alpaca show, which for several years followed the dairy show at the indoor arena on Sunday afternoon/evening. Not so this year, as the llamas and alpacas have their own day, with the show commencing at 3 p.m. today.

Saturday will be normal in the indoor arena, as the 4-H goat show will occupy its familiar time slot, beginning at 8 a.m.

Sunday will feature one of the most notable changes, as the 4-H swine and dairy shows have flip-flopped days, with the pigs first making their way into the indoor arena at 8 a.m. This will culminate with the swine grand drive at 7 p.m.

The need to move the swine show forward a day has to do with the overlap between the Putnam County Fair and the Indiana State Fair. The swine barn at the State Fairgrounds is currently under construction, meaning the swine project will inhabit the beef barn for the first half of the fair, with the more familiar steers and heifers taking over the building for the second half.

Due to the early time swine entries are due at the State Fair, all non-auction swine entries will be released early.

The 4-H dairy show will then follow on Monday beginning at 9 a.m. Additionally, the 4-H poultry show is set for 8:30 a.m. at the poultry barn.

It’s back to normal on Tuesday, with the beef show commencing in the indoor arena at 8 a.m. Beef champion parade and selection will be at 7 p.m.

Likewise, on Wednesday, the 4-H sheep show will be in its familiar timeslot at 8 a.m., followed by the champion selection at 7 p.m. The 4-H rabbit show is also set for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the rabbit barn.

As usual, there will be several days of 4-H horse and pony competition at the outdoor arena, with shows each day from Sunday through Wednesday.

Additionally, with all the large animal projects complete, the Supreme Showmanship competition is set for 3 p.m. (horse portion only) and 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Of course, animals aren’t the only thing at the fair. With much of the judging already complete, 4-H and adult open class projects will be on display in the Fairgrounds Community Building, while horticulture projects will be in Harris Hall.

Other fair highlights include the truck and tractor pull on Sunday, Kids Best Baker on Tuesday, Family Fun Day on Wednesday, Baker’s Best on Thursday and South Plains Ranch Rodeo on Friday, July 29 and Saturday, July 30.

Of course, there is plenty more to do and see at the fair. See complete listings below.
