Susan Jane (Brown) Stewart, 75, of Cloverdale, passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2022, at home surrounded by family after a short battle with pancreatic cancer.

Susan was born on Nov. 13, 1946 in Terre Haute to the late William Brown and Velma (Fenwick) Brown Lyons.

Susan was a 1964 graduate of Sullivan High School and a 1968 graduate of Indiana State University.

Susan married Lee Stewart on Aug. 25, 1968 in Brook, Ind. Their love story moved them to Guam and Japan and back to Indiana. Since retirement, they have wintered in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, which held a special place in her heart.

Susan was a retired speech and hearing pathologist for the South Putnam Community School Corporation, serving as the first speech pathologist in Putnam County. She was also the last teacher to have taught at the Putnamville School. Susan was active as a world traveler, walker, bike rider and swimmer.

The two Putnamville museums — The Doctor Horn Museum and The Townsend/Layman Museum -- are a result of her efforts. She donated her time and talents to many causes through the years, including the Alpha Phi house, the Putnam County Mental Health Association and the Putnamville United Methodist Church.

Her favorite job and the one that brought her immense joy was being a wife, a mom to her two boys and “Susu” to her three grandchildren. She was a consummate historian, loved storytelling, truly enjoyed people, never finding a stranger and instead spreading kindness to everyone she met and everywhere she went.

Susan is survived by her husband of 54 years, Lee; sons Ian (Sarah Freeman) Stewart and Josh (Valerie) Stewart; grandchildren Nia Stewart, Harrison Stewart, and Wesley Stewart; nieces Nancy (Jeff) Thomas and Heather Stewart; and nephews Aaron (Helen) Brown and great-nephews William and Mike (Katherine) Stewart.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; brother Bill Brown; and stepfather Alford Lyons.

A service of remembrance will be held at the Putnamville United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 30 at noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Susan’s memory may be made to the Putnam County Museum, www.putnamcountymuseum.org.
