Metronet recently declared Greencastle a Certified Gigabit City Powered by Metronet after the company’s ultra-high-speed fiber optic network became accessible to a majority of households and businesses throughout the city.

To date, Metronet has installed more than 250 miles of fiber optic cable throughout Greencastle bringing Gigabit speeds to residents and businesses and is continuing to expand from its initial build plan.

“As Metronet’s first fiber optic network city, Greencastle is proud to be named the first Certified Gigabit City Powered by Metronet,” Mayor Bill Dory said. “Greencastle residents and businesses have experienced the benefits of extremely fast and reliable internet service. We are thankful for the impact that Metronet’s service has made as our community continues to grow and thrive.”

Metronet began construction in Greencastle in 2005, as the company’s first market. Since then, Metronet has become the nation’s largest, independently owned 100 percent fiber optic provider building networks in more than 250 communities in 16 states.

“Just over 17 years ago, Metronet started on a journey to bring the fastest and most reliable internet speeds to communities across the U.S. in order to help bridge the digital divide. We are proud to officially declare the City of Greencastle as the first Certified Gigabit City Powered by Metronet as we continue to provide access to a future-proof infrastructure with multi-gigabit speeds in the very near future,” Metronet CEO John Cinelli said. “We are grateful for the continued support and collaboration that we have received from the city as we worked to provide an infrastructure that has improved the quality of life for residents and businesses.”

Metronet maintains a storefront in Greencastle at 15 S. Indiana St. and currently employs more than 25 local associates in departments such as sales, marketing, customer service and field operations. Certification as a Certified Gigabit City Powered by Metronet is earned once a majority of households and business locations have access to Metronet’s symmetrical fiber optic internet speeds of at least 1 Gigabit (1,000 megabits per second).

The number of households is based on the total households (2016-2020) and the number of business locations is based on total all firms (2017) from the U.S. Census Bureau.

  • Temporary outages occur on a regular basis; so much so that temporary has become known as frequent.
