Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated six recent property-damage crashes.

• At 5:55 p.m. on Sunday, Trevor K. Homler, 17, Reelsville, was northbound on Manhattan Road when he fell asleep at the wheel of his 2010 Ford Fusion.

Homler told Deputy Robert Soilleux that he awoke to find he was on the wrong side of the road about to collide with a southbound 2004 Pontiac Montana driven by Dakota L. Gibson, 30, Cloverdale.

Homler said he attempted to steer into the ditch on the west side but could not avoid hitting Gibson’s vehicle. Likewise, Gibson tried to swerve away but could not avoid the crash, which then sent her into a mailbox on the east side of the road.

Despite the crash, neither driver nor their passengers were injured.

Both vehicles were driven from the scene. Soilleux estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At some point between noon and 5:42 p.m. on Friday, a parked 2017 Subaru WRX was struck by an unknown vehicle or object while parked in the South Putnam High School parking lot.

Kimberly S. Koch, 53, Phillipsburg, N.J., had parked her car in the school’s south lot facing north. When she returned, the vehicle had sustained front driver’s side damage.

Deputy Soilleux noted that South Putnam has a security camera located about 50 yards west of the crash, so he contacted the school for information. He had not heard back as of the time of filing his report.

The car was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 11 a.m. on Friday, Cody J. Gatlin, 31, Seymour, was pulling a friend’s RV with a 2021 Dodge Ram 3500 when the RV struck a parked trailer belonging to Regina Hogan.

Gatlin told Cpl. Brian Helmer he attempted to turn east into the parking lot, at which point the RV hit the camper.

Helmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 7:37 a.m. on Friday, Adrian S. Couch, 21, Brazil, was eastbound on Interstate 70 in a construction zone in a 2017 Hyundai Elantra when a pickup truck pulling a trailer turned into his vehicle.

Couch told Cpl. Helmer the truck did not stop but continued eastbound. He was unable to provide a description of the truck, only that it was pulling a black trailer.

Helmer estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 4:16 p.m. on Wednesday, Eric N. Stafford, 52, Indianapolis, was backing his 2016 Chevrolet Silverado on a private residence at 103 N. CR 300 West, Greencastle.

Stafford told Deputy Todd Hopkins he had been stung by hornets and was having an allergic reaction. He was attempting to drive himself to the emergency room but realized his condition was worse than he thought.

He was backing toward his house when he lost consciousness. He later woke up with the truck in the ditch in front of the house.

Stafford was taken to the hospital for treatment, and the truck was pulled from the ditch and parked at the residence.

Hopkins estimated damage $1,000-$2,500.

• At 10:02 p.m. on Saturday, July 23, Oceaia N. Boetjer, 32, Brazil, westbound on State Road 240 in a 2012 Chevrolet Malibu.

Boetjer told Deputy Hopkins she was not paying attention and did not follow the curve of the road. The car left the road and hit something in the ditch before rolling onto its side and sliding several feet, coming to rest after striking a tree. This impact then rolled the vehicle back onto its wheels.

Both Boetjer and her six-year-old passenger had only minor scratches but no other injures. Boetjer refused to be transported to the hospital, saying a family member would take her.

The car was towed. Hopkins estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.
