Creating community leaders

If you were to ask a student like myself what comes to mind when they hear about the Putnam County Community Foundation, the answer would likely be scholarships.

As a current college student and scholarship recipient, I have had many opportunities to interact with the Community Foundation. I have been a grant recipient, a member of the Youth Philanthropy Committee, a scholarship applicant, an intern and a donor. These experiences have given me a unique insight into the many ways the Community Foundation supports the community and its future leaders.

While going to college may seem like a daunting task for some, for others their fears are the financial barriers of continuing their education. Thankfully, there are several opportunities here in Putnam County to lessen the financial burden of post-secondary education.

The Community Foundation houses more than 40 scholarship funds. Each one of these makes an impact on a student’s life in our community, allowing students to enjoy more of their time in college rather than working to pay off the debt that can rack up rather quickly.

While my story is like that of many other students, one full of twists and turns and unexpected surprises, I have also had the honor of being a scholarship recipient for the past three years, thanks to the Putnam County Community Foundation.

I am now heading into my junior year of college, and I look forward each day to getting closer to reaching my goals, including being able to give back to the community that raised me and supported my education. I want to be able to help other students in the same way. By giving back to the scholarship endowments and other philanthropic funds at the Community Foundation, I can be a part of building funds that can have a larger impact on future generations.

The Community Foundation has helped to support me in my journey through college. The people I work with every day at the Community Foundation mean a lot to me. They have taught me that this world needs people like our scholarship recipients, like me, to be the next community leaders. There is never a moment where I feel unsupported at the Community Foundation. For that, I am forever grateful. Not only have they supported me as a scholarship recipient, an intern, and a community member, but they have also supported me as a person who is capable of great things.

In the end, not everyone’s journey will lead them back to Putnam County, but even if it doesn’t you can continue to impact the community you grew up in by being a volunteer, a donor and a representative wherever you go.

Just know that the Putnam County Community Foundation will be there to support you.
