Football Friday: Eagles, Patriots clash after huge week one wins; Tiger Cubs host Knights; Clovers, Cougars search for first wins on the road

Friday, August 26, 2022

What happens when two teams that won by 70 points in week one collide?

An answer will be found Friday when South Putnam travels to Owen Valley, the top matchup of week two that also sees Greencastle host Northview, North Putnam face the other half of Montgomery County in Southmont and Cloverdale make the long trek to Edinburgh.

The Eagles and Patriots both had little trouble in week one with the former defeating the Clovers 70-0 while the latter walloped Brown County 77-7.

Each side did its damage in slightly different ways but both were extremely efficient on offense and added a score on special teams. Owen Valley won the 2021 meeting 29-13.

South Putnam did most of its damage on the ground as Luke Switzer ran for 141 yards on 11 carries and two touchdown while Peyton Crickmore, Wyatt Mullin and Wyatt Speth had a touchdown each.

Mullin was very efficient in the passing game, going 8-of-9 for 134 yards and four scores with the scores divided by Drew Hill and Zach Dorsett.

Owen Valley was even more efficient in the air as Brody Lester was 11-of-15 for 290 yards and seven touchdowns while the running game was only called on six times for 68 yards, Christian McDonald accounting for 55 yards on two rushes for two scores while also catching two passes for 79 yards and a score.

Chris Zellstra was the primary receiving target, hauling in four receptions for 105 yards and three scores while Brayden Phillippe had three catches for 92 yards and a score. Eli Henshaw and Dillon Risk also caught touchdown passes.

Greencastle, meanwhile, hosts Northview, a team the Tiger Cubs have not beaten since 2016 and lost last year’s meeting 39-0.

The Tiger Cubs used a strong performance from Lamar Moore on the ground (18 carries, 118 yards, three touchdowns) to beat Indianapolis Crispus Attucks 42-0. Moore and Brayden Monroe had two sacks each on defense.

The Knights had an even better running game performance, accounting for all 351 yards of offense against Terre Haute North with Kyle Cottee (28 carries, 213 yards, three touchdowns) and Imer Holman (18 carries, 127 yards, touchdown) doing the damage.

North Putnam will look to get its first win of the season as the Cougars travel to Southmont, who defeated Fountain Central 55-12 last week. The Mounties won last year’s meeting 32-7.

Christian Kramer was put to work early, going 22-of-36 for 242 yards but threw four interceptions against the Chargers while three other fumbles kept North Putnam from ever gaining traction last week.

Noah Claycomb picked up 50 yards on 18 carries to lead the rushing attack, scoring the lone Cougar touchdown and adding five catches for 44 yards, while Arrick Kramer had eight catches for 80 yards and Myles Bryan had five catches for 97 yards in the receiving game.

The Mounties ended last week with 12 different ball carriers on offense, amassing 285 yards on 33 carries with Wyatt Woodall (seven rushes, 40 yards, touchdown) and Kellan Kaelin (seven rushes, 54 yards, touchdown) getting the most work.

Nick Scott was 4-of-5 for 47 yards and two passing touchdowns while Seth Tolliver had seven tackles for loss on defense, including two sacks and two forced fumbles.

Cloverdale will make the longest drive of the week as the Clovers look to do better against Edinburgh after being defeated 55-0 last year by the Lancers.

Edinburgh won a tough 14-6 game over Indianapolis Tindley with Caleb Murphy going 14-of-23 for 245 yards and two scores, both going to Caleb Dewey, who caught seven of the 14 competitions for 162 yards.

The Lancers struggled on the ground against the Tiger defense, though, only gaining 25 yards on 22 carries with Jarrett Turner getting 18 of those yards on eight carries.

Keegan Smith led Edinburgh with 10 tackles on defense, including four for loss and a sack, while Dewey and Turner both had interceptions.

Cloverdale also struggled in the rushing game against South Putnam, getting 10 yards on 24 carries with Tayt Jackson accounting for eight yards on 15 carries.

Jackson was 9-of-20 for 77 yards with Tyson Bridges snaring a 44 yard reception while McGuire Lee and Levi Hilton caught four passes each.
