DePauw donors give $36.5 million, highest alum giving rate since 2016

Thursday, September 1, 2022

Supporters of DePauw University donated $36.5 million in fiscal year 2022, Anne E. Cunningham, vice president for development and alumni engagement, announced recently.

“It has been an honor in my first year at DePauw to work with the university’s alumni and friends to provide such generous support for developing leaders and innovators the world needs,” Cunningham said.

The Fund for DePauw, which supports every aspect of the university’s goal to provide an outstanding liberal arts and sciences education, received $5.4 million in gifts from 9,297 alumni, parents and friends. Alumni participation rose to 21 percent.

Alumni from 83 classes made gifts, with the oldest from the Class of 1944 and the youngest from the Class of 2022. The Class of 2006 led all classes with 116 donors, followed by the Classes of 2007 (106), 1982 (104), 1970 (103) and 2003 (99).

The university’s Day of Giving last fall generated nearly $400,000 in support from 1,918 donors, the highest one-day total in DePauw’s history.

“Alumni know from their personal experiences that a DePauw education prepares our students to lead and succeed in a wide array of fields from business and entrepreneurship to the sciences, the arts, education and nonprofit sectors,” Cunningham said. “Our fundraising results and the stories our donors share show that our alumni and friends are passionate about supporting DePauw and our students in creating a bold and gold future.”

  • You mention taxes, we should be taxing the churches to pay for it! Especially the Catholic churches, since they're so obsessed with making laws that take away women's rights. And it's not even so much their claim that it's murder- they just think it's sinful that people are having sex for fun, period.

  • Sounds like the alumni had a good year.

I wonder what made them money this year?

Maybe they owned stock in vaccine makers with government contracts?

Maybe they owned social media stock?

Maybe they owned bank stock that financed green energy stock?

I just wonder how they had such a wonderful financial year to give to their favorite tax shelter.

I guess they are just paying it forward to keep the money pump primed for the current and future socialist agenda to carry on.

  • As a DePauw alum, I should be upset at your comments, direstraits - but, oddly, I agree 100%!! It sometimes embarasses me the way liberal arts colleges send such entitled graduates into the society to make it worse for the common people instead of better for all.

  • I am just stunned at how it is evil to be successful. Why is making money bad? Why is giving it away bad? This isn't a political issue. All political thoughts have wealthy members.

But, then again, as we continue down the road of a bail out and support culture, working to be successful is going to continue to become more rare.

As for taxes, I say we tax only the wealthy SSLLC leaders and influencers plus their congregation. Oh, and have them pay ALL taxes from having to write a check. Payroll, sales, etc.

  • Ah, yes... the con-servative republican capitalist fantasy is alive and well......

Let me share a youtube video I recently watched that really nails down the typical republican mindset-

  • Congrats for playbook execution. Sadly, doesn't apply with practical sense, middle of spectrum people.

Does prove what I believe to be true- a SSSLLC views anyone right of them is an extremist.

Now engagement time- Why is it evil to be successful? Are wealthy SSLSLC people evil? Do you want a cap on what you can earn? Are those who strive to be financially successful evil?

  • Dang it! Friggin' auto-correct on my phone must have changed the video link. This is the one I was talking about:

  • I don't know anything about this SLLCC playbook you're always referring to.... the only one I can find is the SL playbook, aka the Silver Linings Playbook, but that's just a romantic comedy starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence!

It's a really good movie, but I don't think you'd like it since it has people in it having recreational sex for reasons other than making babies.

  • I'm just trolling, it's this one-

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8I5pq7UGq-I

This is the video where they're talking about the fantasy world bs that con-servatives are selling.

Btw I like those other videos so I'm not at all making fun of them.

  • Did like that movie- assumptions wrong again. Playbook in action- deflect and don't answer real questions.

    Enjoy your weekend.

  • Beg, I didn't answer your questions because they're the very definition of a straw man argument. Nobody said making money is evil. Is underpaying or overworking your employees to gain your wealth an evil thing to do? Yeah, I think so. Would we need so many government programs if people were paid incomes to support themselves? No. Would there be a need for so much charity? Nope. Does giving a tiny portion of hoarded wealth to charity and being treated like some saint for it justify all the unethical business practices that led there? Of course not. If your business can't afford to pay its employees enough or can't afford to treat them reasonably, then should you even have a business? No, your business should close. Everyone gets this, it's why the big business guy/ corporations are always the villain in the movies.

  • Understand your perspective. Anything right of the SCLLSS theology is extremist.

Question- since communism and socialism are great and you are so passionate about it, why don't you relocate to a place that is controlled/ ran by that political theology?

-- Posted by beg on Sat, Sep 3, 2022, at 4:06 PM
  • Why would I live somewhere else? The majority of people in the US like socialism, and that majority only keeps growing with each passing day!

Maybe you should think about relocating somewhere like Texas or Alaska. I hear the republicans there dream of one day seceding and becoming their own country! I guess only then, will they finally be free from the tyranny of the US government's terrible communist taxes and regulations...

-- Posted by Raker on Sat, Sep 3, 2022, at 6:21 PM
  • And once again, you are showing your bias. I am not a Republican. I am a practical sense centrist. That requires be open minded rather than close minded. That means voting with a mind rather than a lock step with a political theology.

I feel sad for those who are robotic in their political behavior. But I truly understand your thought process. I may disagree with it but I respect your right to have to your communist/ socialist perspective

-- Posted by beg on Sat, Sep 3, 2022, at 11:59 PM
  • Here's to hoping in the end republicans/centrists have been successfully exposed as the hateful liars they really are, so that enough people will finally stop listening to them and vote for democrats. Then we can finally have good government and normalcy for a change.

  • Yikes! We have examples of that in cities everywhere!!!!!

I would say you leftist extremists and those on the right let the middle try.

-- Posted by beg on Sun, Sep 4, 2022, at 4:00 PM
  • As for hateful liars, I guess that means they have something in common with the SSLCSL!! There is hope that all we see the common ground they stand on!

  • I agree with you, there are lots of good government in cities, especially big cities like Indy for example- where populations keep growing and business is booming! Greencastle is also doing good, would be a lot better but you can only do so much in a small college town that's in a small rural county run by republicans. too bad the cities don't have anything to do with state or federal level social programs or funding... but can't wait to see what happens in November!

-- Posted by Raker on Sun, Sep 4, 2022, at 4:59 PM
  • You left out Chicago, Detroit, LA, St Louis, Seattle, San Fran, NYC, and sooooo many more from your good government lists. Kind of funny you listed Indy. Looks pretty centrist to me with both Republican and Dem mayors!!!

    Those other cities?

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and maybe we can meet in another article.

    Stay safe

  • I don't get your point about those other cities, probably because I don't watch the same Fox News republican propaganda that's constantly feeding people this dishonest fearmongering about how terrible cities are. If your point is that Democrats are the reason why there's crime and homelessness, I think that's stupid. There's also plenty of crooks and crazies out in the country.

I just checked out Chicago as an example, since you mentioned it. It had the lowest crime rate since the 1960's and had been on a steady decline since the 80's according to a 2013 Stanford study.

As far as the homelessness problem, of course they're in the city! You expect them to wander the county roads? Sleep in a ditch next to a field, make a little bed of cornstalks?

As far as the rioting and looting, and I said before, that has been happening going way back in history in response to black and other minority Americans being unjustly brutalized and murdered by police, look it up for yourself. Has nothing to do with whether democrats or republicans are in charge. So if you don't want see that happen anymore, then you should support police reform legislation. Yeah you have a good Sunday as well.

    Watch your back out there.

  • 2013? check last 10 years. You can do better than that.

    I love the effort though!!!

  • The city's overall crime rate, especially the violent crime rate, is higher than the US average. Chicago was responsible for nearly half of 2016's increase in homicides in the US, though the nation's crime rates remained near historic lows as of 2016.[1][2][3]

Chicago experienced major rises in violent crime in the 1920s, in the late 1960s, and in the 2020s.[10] a decline in overall crime in the 2000s,[11] and then a rise in murders in 2016.[12] Murder, rape, and robbery are common violent crimes in the city, and the occurrences of such incidents are documented by the Chicago Police Department and indexed in annual crime reports.[13]

After adopting crime-fighting techniques in 2004 that were recommended by the Los Angeles Police Department and the New York City Police Department,[14] Chicago recorded 448 homicides, the lowest total since 1965. This murder rate of 15.65 per 100,000 population was still above the U.S. average, an average which takes in many small towns and suburbs.[15]

By 2010, Chicago's homicide rate had surpassed that of Los Angeles (16.02 per 100,000), and was more than twice that of New York City (7.0 per 100,000).[16] By the end of 2015, Chicago's homicide rate rose to 18.6 per 100,000. By 2016, Chicago had recorded more homicides and shooting victims than New York City and Los Angeles combined.[17] By the end of 2020, Chicago's homicide rate rose to 28 per 100,000.

  • I still don't understand your point, you trying to say that murder in Chicago is because of democrats? Crime rates everywhere went up in 2020 related to the pandemic, as far as the increase starting in 2016 one could argue that it was related to Trump and his ugly, hateful campaign that stirred up people's emotions.

It looks like one main difference could be although LA, New York and Chicago all have strict gun laws to help stop violent crime (New York and LA seem to be working), Chicago has a specific problem with guns from out of state being purchased through straw man sales or otherwise, to side step these laws. A Chicago Tribune article says that 60% of illegally used guns were from out of state, and, no surprise here, that Indiana gun sellers are frequently cited as the no. 1 source for illegal guns in Chicago. I guess strict gun laws don't work to stop gun violence when you can drive across across the border into Indiana and easily buy a gun, huh?
