Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 6:51 p.m. on Sunday, Cpl. Brian Helmer investigated an ATV crash at 287 Lincoln Hills, Coatesville (Heritage Lake). He was advised a female had flipped an ATV on top of herself and her passenger, and that the driver of the ATV did not know where her passenger was.

Helmer arrived at the residence to find Pamela M. Hensley, 49, Coatesville, sitting on the front porch showing signs of trauma, with blood coming from her mouth and face. Helmer also noticed a 1999 Yamaha Big Bear four-wheeler parked in the garage with tree limbs attached to it, appearing to be the vehicle involved in the crash.

Hensley told Helmer she had been driving the four-wheeler on the trails behind her house and had accelerate too hard going up a hill, causing the vehicle to flip over onto her and Jessie Hensley, 55, Coatesville, who had been riding on the back.

With Pamela saying she did not know where Jessie was, Helmer and Reserve Deputy Commander Ken Rozelle entered the house to find him. Firefighters and other officers went into the woods to find him, but could not.

Pamela told the responders that if they could not find Jessie there, he was probably at the neighbor’s house. They found him there, with scrapes but saying he was okay.

Jessie agreed with Pamela’s account that she had been driving the ATV and given it too much throttle.

Pamela also told Helmer she had consumed about five alcoholic beverages prior to the crash. She was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute for her injuries.

Helmer estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 6:35 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, Michael Metzger, 30, Quincy, was eastbound on State Road 42 near County Road 850 East in a 2003 Pontiac Vibe when he hit a deer.

Deputy Randy Patrick estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 9:20 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 15, Kayla D. McDermit, 34, Greencastle, was westbound on U.S. 40 near County Road 725 East in a 2018 Kia Sorento.

McDermit told Deputy Patrick that she dropped her coffee cup and lost control when she reached for it. The car veered left across the shoulder and into a guardrail, causing severe damage to both the vehicle and the guardrail.

She was seen by Putnam County EMS but signed a statement of release, electing to seek her own care as needed.

The vehicle was towed. Patrick estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.
