County commissioner injured in Northern Indiana hunting accident
WINAMAC — A Putnam County commissioner was injured in a hunting accident that occurred Thursday in Pulaski County.
David Berry, 69, Roachdale, suffered non-life-threatening injuries to his arms, legs and abdomen when he was struck by pellets from a 20-gauge shotgun.
According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement, Berry was dove hunting along a Sandy Prairie Hunt Club field.
The DNR’s initial investigation revealed that unbeknownst to other hunters, Berry began searching for a downed dove in an uncut cornfield and walked in the direction of another group of hunters.
At that time, a juvenile hunter attempted to shoot a low-flying dove and struck Berry from approximately 35 yards away.
Members of Berry’s hunting party took him to Pulaski Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The incident remains under investigation.
In speaking briefly with the Banner Graphic on Saturday, Berry revealed that he was feeling well enough that he planned to be at Tuesday’s Commissioners meeting.
Berry is currently in the second year of his third term as District 1 Putnam County commissioner.
Indiana conservation officers remind all hunters to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of those around them. If changing your known location, be sure the others around you know of your location at all times.
