Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated one recent property-damage crash.

• At 12:45 a.m. on Thursday, Ty D. Smith, 20, Mooresville, was eastbound on State Road 240 in a 2021 Toyota Tacoma when he swerved to avoid a deer in the road.

In swerving, Smith ran off the side of the road and into the ditch, where the vehicle went through a utility pole.

The broken pole, which contained internet and phone lines, fell and blocked both lanes of travel. The vehicle was also heavily damaged and had to be towed.

Deputy Robert Soilleux reported that Smith complained of pain all over, as well as possible broken fingers to his right hand. However, he refused medical transport, instead having family drive him to the hospital.

Soilleux estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.
