Tiger Cubs end up on wrong side of 3-2 loss to Chargers

After a tough run of matches in recent outings, Greencastle looked to pick up a win against a North Montgomery boys’ tennis team that had also had its struggles throughout the 2022 season.

The two squads split the No. 1 and 2 positions in singles and doubles play but the Chargers were able to pick up the swing bout at No. 3 singles to end the week with a 3-2 win over the Tiger Cubs.

“I told the team it should have been our match,” Greencastle head coach Annette Munoz said. “We were competitive and good sportsmen the whole night.

“It’s harder to lose a close match than otherwise. We’re growing, but it’s tough in the middle of the season when everyone else is doing the same. Every position has wins but we need to string them together on the same night.”

On one set of courts, the Charger doubles teams were able to lock in identical winning scores.

Beckett Martin and Brookes Walters defeated Dorian Dowd and Justin Evans at No. 1 doubles while Haze Kashon and Nate McCoy defeated Joel Hammond and Paul Lewis at No. 2 doubles, both matches ending with 6-3, 6-1 score lines.

On the other set of courts, Greencastle claimed the top two spots in singles play.

Eli Callahan won the match at No. 1 singles over Owen Utterback 6-1, 6-2 while Jay Glotzbach was able to fend off Hayden Turner in the first set as part of a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 2 single.

That left the match at No. 3 singles to be the deciding point but North Montgomery had already claimed the deciding match as Alex Chapman defeated Andrew Adams 6-0, 6-2 to lock in the win for the Chargers.

Greencastle returns to action next Tuesday against Indian Creek, the defending WIC champions, with Munoz looking for the squad to keep making strides against a strong Braves squad.

“Indian Creek is super strong in the conference championship race this year,” Munoz noted. “Every day is a new day and we tell the guys we need to step on the court, ready to work, even if we’re in a little bit of a slump.

“Two things we can control, as Lynn Ramey told me, is effort and attitude. You can’t control the atmosphere or the things around you but as long as they have good efforts and attitudes, I’m proud of the boys and I want to keep seeing those things.”
