Menzel wins Jon Mitchell Invite as Cougars take second by a point over Eagles

CLAYTON — Seven Putnam County boys made up the top-10 at the Jon Mitchell Cross Country Invitational Saturday at Cascade High School as North Putnam finished as runner-up and South Putnam third by a single point.

The Cadets won the boys’ team title with a strong middle pack showing, taking five spots between places 8-13. North Putnam was second in the boys’ race on 69 points with South Putnam third on 70. Greencastle finished fifth on 104 points with Cloverdale sixth on 140.

Greenfield-Central won the girls’ team title with North Putnam fourth on 85 points and South Putnam fifth on 114. Greencastle and Cloverdale had less than five runners competing and did not have a team score.

Charlie Menzel and Landon Miller grabbed a 1-2 finish in the boys’ race for Greencastle with times of 17:05 and 17:38 respectively.

Cougar duo Jeremiah Miles and Brayden Monett finished third and fourth in 17:43 and 17:47 while South Putnam’s Keaton Chew, Dunkin York and Gabe Feltner finished sixth, ninth and 10th overall in 18:15, 18:41 and 18:46 respectively.

North Putnam would get the runner-up after Corie Stancombe finished 15th (19:35), Nelson Thomas finished 23rd (20:23) and Elijah Harless finished 24th (20:25). Kaleb Walton finished in 24:36 while Owen O’Hair finished in 25:59.

South Putnam’s Evan Hinkle finished 19th (19:53) while Harry Eaglin was 26th overall (20:34). Other Eagle finishers included Noah Couch in 22:30. Landon Chew in 23:25, Isaac Boyce in 23:55, Emilio Gallegos in 23:59 and Gunner Roach in 24:42.

Daniel Dinn was the third Tiger Cub runner to finish, placing 30th in 21:13, followed by Isaac Hertenstein in 43rd place in 23:50 and Jeremiah Weir in 51st in 25:59.

Cloverdale was paced by Carson Hall in 17th place in 19:38, followed by Matthew Miller in 25th place in 20:28 and Jacob Miller in 32nd place in 21:55. Spencer Nees finished 37th in 22:44 while Tanner Trammel finished 49th in 25:31.

Jacy Huffman led the Cougars in the girls’ race with an eighth-place finish in 23:28 with Maddie Trent finishing 13th overall in 24:14. Alaina Chew finished 24th overall in 26:32 with Brooke Hensley finishing 27th in 27:36 and Erica Zatorski finishing 36th overall in 33:21.

Elise Kendall crossed first for the Eagles in 12th place in 24:05 while Stevie Kennan finished in 28th place in 27:52. Molly Trammell finished 33rd overall in 30:38 with Bailey Haddon crossing in 35th place in 33:03 and Sarah Hinchman finishing 37th overall in 33:58.

Clovers Ella Szczerbik and Abigail Nees finished third and fourth in the girls’ race in 22:38 and 22:40 with Daphanie Geiger finishing 15th overall in 24:25 and Hannah Baker 29th in 28:16.

Greencastle’s Meredith Ball crossed the line in 26th place in 27:28.
