SULLIVAN — Entering Friday night’s Western Indiana Conference crossover game with Sullivan, Greencastle coach Mike Meyer knew Rowdy Adams would pose a problem.

Meyer was right.

The Sullivan quarterback accounted for a pair of touchdowns with his right arm and two more with his legs as the Golden Arrows pitched a 38-0 shutout over visiting Greencastle.

“He was the one I was worried about,” the veteran Greencastle coach said of Adams. “He really hurt us. When you have a player like that, you use him and that’s what they did.”

Adams was not the only thorn in the Tiger Cubs’ side Friday night.

Sullivan defensive back Seth Pirtle came up with three interceptions and the Arrows recovered three more fumbles.

Four of the six Greencastle turnovers came in the first half. But Sullivan was not able to take advantage of the miscues and only led 16-0 at intermission.

“I was happy with where we were in the first half,” Meyer said of the two-score deficit. “We made too many mistakes, but the kids were playing hard and we were still in it. But in the second half, we just didn’t do anything. I am disappointed in the way we finished.”

Greencastle did not start off the game on a good note either.

After a three-and-out on the first possession, a bad snap on the punt attempt went high and resulted in a safety just two minutes into the game.

After the free kick gave the hosts possession at midfield, Rowdy Adams found his triplet, Luke, for a 28-yard score and a 9-0 lead with 5:39 left in the opening frame.

Greencastle’s second possession ended with Pirtles’ first interception.

The two teams traded possessions before Sullivan cashed in on the Tiger Cubs’ second turnover of the game.

Six plays after recovering a fumble at the Greencastle 38-yard line, Rowdy Adams capped the short drive with a 10-yard keeper for a 16-0 lead with 6:11 remaining in the half.

The score remained the same until Sullivan scored three times in the fourth quarter to put the game away.

“We got thumped in the fourth quarter,” a dejected Meyer said. “That’s the most disappointing part about tonight, we just didn’t finish.”

Averaging nearly 200 yards rushing per game entering Friday night, Sullivan limited the Tiger Cubs to 81 yards on the ground on 28 totes. Lamar Moore led the way with 50 yards on 16 carries.

“Up front our guys did a great job tonight,” Sullivan coach Mike Caton said of his defensive line. “Their running back (Moore) is a big strong physical kid so holding him to 50 yards is impressive.”

For the game, Greencastle recorded just 92 yards from scrimmage on 38 plays.

Rowdy Adams rushed for a game-high 140 yards and passed for another 184 yards for the Golden Arrows, while Lane Deckard added 85 yards on the ground.

Luke Adams caught five passes for 79 yards.

“They have some good players and they just put it to us tonight,” Meyer said of the Arrows’ skill players.
