The WIC’s two-horse boys’ soccer race continued apace Saturday as Greencastle’s Seth Kallem scored all four of his team’s goals in a 4-1 win over Sullivan, keeping the Tiger Cubs undefeated in conference play.

“This is the best we’ve played all season,” Greencastle head coach JD Sims said. “It’s the best we’ve moved the ball.

“It’s funny because we’ve been winning games with big numbers but still been really disappointed that we haven’t controlled the tempo. This is the first really great job of it; we saw some of it against West Vigo and today, we’re really happy with how we played.”

Kallem and teammate Micah Foss struck a strong partnership throughout the match as the freshman Foss set up three of the four goals for the senior, the first coming 15 minutes into the match.

A second followed 12 minutes later after a shallow goal kick was stolen and recycled, giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Greencastle had several more chances throughout the half and later in the second half but found Ben Flath hard to beat in goal.

“We’ve been really talking about our midfield and finding their position,” Sims said about how the team was organized. “We found it today as we’ve been pushed up too far, leaving gaps.

“Milyn (Tucker) played the best game I’ve seen him play all year and I’m really excited for the way he played today. Everybody performed well and while Seth stood out, Clay (Glessner) and (Dylan) Olson had great games at the back and we’re very happy with things.”

Sullivan, hemmed in for most of the first half, started stronger in the second half and was rewarded with a goal after Sam Fathauer turned a throw-in into a dipping strike that halved the deficit at 2-1.

Another short goal kick from the Golden Arrows was punished four minutes later, however, with Foss teeing up Kallem to restore the two-goal lead.

Less than a minute later, a handball call in the box allowed Kallem to make it four goals by converting the penalty kick.

The Tiger Cubs’ possession-based attack kept the visitors from mounting any real comeback attempt though Foss was unable to get a goal of his own after rolling a ball off the post inside the final 10 minutes.

Greencastle moves to 9-1-1 on the season and 5-0 in WIC play, level with North Putnam as the two teams remain on a collision course ahead of this Saturday’s meeting. The Tiger Cubs will travel to Edgewood Tuesday before hosting South Vermillion Thursday.
