BREAKING: Greencastle football head coach Mike Meyer placed on indefinite leave

Greencastle football head coach Mike Meyer has been placed on indefinite leave ahead of Friday’s contest at home against Brown County.

Meyer was placed on leave Thursday. The Tiger Cubs are currently 2-3 in the 2022 season and were set to host the Eagles for homecoming on Friday. Meyer is currently 62-69 in his 13th season at Greencastle and was in his second stint as head coach of the team.

“Coach Meyer is on indefinite leave from coaching football,” Greencastle athletic director Doug Greenlee said in a phone call. “Matt Helmer has assumed the interim tag as our head football coach.

“Nothing else will be decided until the weekend. If nothing changes, Matt will remain our coach until further notice. There are no other changes in staff.”

Greenlee added that the players were aware of the change and that there was no effect on Meyer’s teaching position. Meyer is an English teacher at Greencastle High School.

While events were still early, Greenlee said any coaching search would not begin in the immediate future.

“We will wait on that,” Greenlee said about if a coaching search would begin immediately or wait until the end of the season. “We’re in the really early stages of development and trying to get through a game tomorrow.

“We will get organized shortly and move forward from there.”
