Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• On Sunday evening before 7 p.m., Sarah Ratliff, 32, Cloverdale, was apparently westbound on County Road 1100 South when she ran off the road in a 2005 Pontiac Grand Am.

The car was unoccupied on the arrival of Deputy Joshua Clark. However, Clark noted that the car the car crossed the centerline and ran off the road as it approached a cutback corner to the right. He noticed yaw marks on the road 69 feet before entering the ditch, where it struck trees and a guy wire for an electric pole. There were no skid marks to indicate braking.

However, Clark said it appeared the vehicle then drove down the road for a quarter mile and parked on the north side of the road.

When Clark made contact with Ratliff, she said a vehicle was in her lane, causing her to swerve to avoid a collision.

Ratliff told Clark that she was not intoxicated at the time of the crash, but had started drinking when she arrived at her mom’s house. She said her brother came looking for her when she did not show up at his girlfriend’s house, then took her to her mom’s house.

She said she did not report the crash because there is no cell phone service in the area. The crash was reported by a passer by.

Ratliff was cited for leaving the scene of a property-damage accident, driving without financial responsibility and driving with expired plates.

The car was towed. Clark estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 5 a.m. on Saturday, Jerry L. Windle, 38, Indianapolis, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe when he hit a tree limb that was down, covering most of the left lane of traffic.

Deputy Clark estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 10:18 p.m. on Friday, Daniel Scotten, 64, Coatesville, was northbound on County Road 875 East in a 2022 Chevrolet Colorado when he approached a 90-degree turn at County Road 450 North with which he was unfamiliar.

Reserve Deputy Commander Ken Rozelle reported that Scotten failed to negotiate the curve and continued straight into a six-foot drainage ditch, causing the truck to roll onto its side.

Scotten said he was not injured and declined medical attention.

Rozelle estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000. The truck was towed.
