SAR seeking descendants of Revolutionary veteran Piercy

CLOVERDALE — A veteran of the Revolutionary War who is buried in Cloverdale Cemetery will be honored in an Oct. 23 ceremony.

Jacob Piercy served as a fifer and a drummer for the Pennsylvania Line and enlisted in 1777. He was present at Valley Forge.

During the 3 p.m. ceremony at the cemetery, the John Martin Chapter of the Indiana Society Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) will be marking Piercy’s grave with a Patriot Marker and a Valley Forge Medallion. There will be wreath presentations and a musket salute.

Any descendants of Jacob Piercy who reside in the area are encouraged to attend. Descendants who attend will be recognized during the ceremony.

SAR has also invited state and local dignitaries to attend.

Anyone with an interest in local or U.S. history is invited to the ceremony.

According to online records, Jacob Piercy was born in 1759 in Pennsylvania. He married Abby Piercy on Nov. 4, 1794 in Rockingham City, Va., relocating to Kentucky shortly thereafter.

He moved to Cloverdale in 1822, passing away there on Aug. 28, 1831 at 72 years of age, according to his gravestone.
