While Jalen Hardman (second left) doesn't make the best contact, Greencastle's Milyn Tucker (16) keeps his eye on the ball and would poke home the ball for the Tiger Cubs' seventh goal of the night in a 9-1 win over Owen Valley Monday night.

Six goals in the first half ensured Greencastle had a comfortable opening to IHSAA Boys’ Soccer Class 2A Sectional No. 29 play at Robert L. Harbison Stadium, defeating Owen Valley 9-1 Monday night.

“I was really happy with how we played the first half,” Greencastle head coach JD Sims said. “In the second half, I wanted the boys to be disciplined and then it turned into a clown fest.

“We’ll figure some things out (Tuesday).”

Seth Kallem opened the scoring five minutes after the opening kickoff, having missed a pair of chances prior, running onto Milyn Tucker’s through ball and slotting past keeper Tim Roddy for a 1-0 lead.

Kallem made it 2-0 five minutes later with a header from a Micah Foss corner and would eventually finish his hat trick just a minute before the intermission.

Before then, Foss struck twice in two minutes, first getting on the end of a hooked pass from Boyd Ensley, moving right and firing back to his left before getting on the end of a Tucker through ball and rifling past Roddy midway through the half.

Ensley had the other goal, tapping in a saved Kallem shot 15 minutes from halftime as the Tiger Cubs strolled to a 6-0 halftime lead.

Owen Valley got its lone goal two minutes into the second half when Gavin Kennedy headed home a corner past Harris Weltz.

Tucker poked home 10 minutes later after Jalen Hardman made partial contact on a Foss free kick while the latter score twice more as the match petered out.

Greencastle will return to action Wednesday, facing Brown County after the latter defeated West Vigo 1-0 in the opening match of the sectional.

The Tiger Cubs defeated the Eagles 10-1 early in the season with Sims looking for the team to come in focused to the task at hand.

“We’ll just play our game,” Sims said about the semifinal match-up. “We’ve been doing a good job controlling the ball better now then the first time we played Brown County.

“As long as the boys come in with their heads on straight, we’ll be fine.”

West Vigo 0-1 Brown County

The Eagles picked up the only goal of the game in the final 15 minutes of the first half to defeat the Vikings, who won the first meeting 3-0.

Both sides struggled to create good scoring opportunities until Carter Norcutt turned in a pass from Silas Cambridge for a 1-0 lead.

Chances were few a far between in the second half with West Vigo having two half-chances late, one a shot from distance and a second a cross that went untouched across the box.

Brown County will face Greencastle in the first game of the semifinal round Wednesday at 5 p.m.
