CLAYTON – North Putnam saw its season come to a quick end after Cascade claimed a 9-0 win in the opening game of IHSAA Girls’ Soccer Class A Sectional No. 41 Tuesday.

“I expected to have and was hopefully of seeing more of the triangles, the passing, the communication that the girls have been working and improving on all season,” North Putnam head coach Allison Everman said. “They were able to show that today.”

The Cadets opened the scoring six minutes into the match after a deflected pass allowed Anna Burns to race in and slot past Layla Hassar in goal.

Just after 10 minutes the hosts were up 3-0 after Grace Trump first headed home a cross-shot that Hassar had gotten hands to before the Trump beat Hassar to a loose ball and tucked home.

A period of calm settled in with Cascade keeping possession and working through several attacks but one only add one more goal before halftime through Ainsley Engel four minutes before halftime.

The Cadets scored twice in three minutes to start the second half, Mallory Laughlin turning home a delightful cross before Creedance Chittenden scored on a breakaway to make it 6-0.

Engel added a second midway though the second half, followed by a second Laughlin goal, before the former ended the match with 10 minutes to play with a hat-trick that enforced the mercy rule.

The Cougars finish the season 3-13-1 with a squad primarily made up of freshmen and sophomores and Everman said she was hopefully the girls would learn from the night despite the lopsided loss.

“It’s good experience,” Everman said. “Most of my team had not been to sectionals before.

“The first-time jitters will be gone next year while they will build their skills to be stronger. I’m still hopeful there is a positive we can take away from this for next year with a more experienced team.”
