GREENCASTLE BOYS' SOCCER SECTIONAL: Tiger Cubs ground Eagles again to reach final

Wednesday, October 5, 2022

The Greencastle Tiger Cubs boys’ soccer team rolled to its 15th win of the season with a 9-0 victory against the Brown County Eagles in the Class 2A Sectional No. 29 semifinal Wednesday night.

Seth Kallem and Micah Foss combined for eight goals to pace Greencastle.

Scoring came fast and furious in this one. Foss got it going just a little over a minute into the action. Kallem and Boyd Ensley assisted on the goal as the Tiger Cubs used masterful passing to set up the score.

Kallem then wanted in on the scoring, getting goals just minutes apart to put Greencastle up 3-0 in just under seven minutes. Foss assisted on both goals and Logan Peters was in on one also.

The pace of the game slowed, but Greencastle controlled it and the possession, getting more opportunities. If not for a couple of nice saves from Eagle goalie Bradley Arndt, the score could have been worse.

Foss and Kallem would each add another goal before halftime, each assisting on the others goal. Brilliant play from all aspects of the team was the pretty part, all levels made great decisions and precise passing.

The second half was more of the same. Kallem added his last goal just four minutes in, once again assisted by Foss, the latter scoring twice more himself with one coming off one of the few rebounds given up by Arndt.

With just under six minutes left, Greencastle ended the game off the foot of freshman Anthony Peters. Kallem made a brilliant cross and Peters put it home. With the nine-goal advantage, the game ended by mercy rule.

“We’ve been working really hard to find the right way to control the tempo of the game. We are really just now finding how to control the pace and speed. Really proud of them,” said Greencastle coach JD Sims afterwards.

“When we subbed in some of the younger guys, they showed real promise too,” added coach Sims. “This may be the strongest freshman class since I’ve been here.”

Greencastle will face Northview in an all-WIC final Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Harbison Stadium.
