Charles W. Tipton

Charles W. Tipton, 82, Greencastle, passed away Oct.11, 2022, at the Putnam County Hospital in Greencastle.

He was born June 1, 1940 in Anderson to Elvenia M. Reinhardt Tipton and Thomas Verlie Tipton.

He lived in Anderson, Chesterfield and Daleville and from February 1982 until March 1983 in Oklahoma City. He then returned to Anderson and lived there until November 1997 when he and his wife, Barbara, moved to Lady Lake, Fla., and Ocala, Fla. He moved back to Indiana in January 2005.

Charles graduated from Lindbergh School in 1954 and Anderson High School in 1958. He also attended Indiana Business College in 1959. He was a 1988 graduate of Indiana University at Kokomo.

He worked at A&P Supermarket from 1954 to 1962, where he also was union steward and served on the board of directors for Local 1441 Retail Clerks Association at the age of 19. He was employed by Delco Remy in 1962 and worked in Plants 3, 7, 10, 11, 17, 19 and 20, on utility, production and stock chaser. He also worked in the production control office in Plant 20 and the Technical Training Center in Plant 1. He served on the United Way committee and as tour guide in Plant 20. He retired in 1993. Charles entered the Army in 1963 and was honorably discharged in 1966 with the rank of corporal.

He was a member of American Legion, past member of the Moose Lodge in Greencastle, Eagles Lodge in Plainfield and Anderson and was a past member of Travelers Protection Association, Independent Insurance Agents Association and I.U. Alumni Association and Varsity Club.

Charles married Barbara Lynne Riggs on March 25, 1979 and is survived by her. Also surviving are stepdaughters Stacy Lowe (husband Chris) of Reelsville and Cherri Enea (husband Jim) of Fishers; stepson Jay Riggs (wife Julayne) of Queen Creek, Ariz.; granddaughters Christina Bloch Rodefelt (spouse Jennifer Rodefelt) of Fishers, Aubrey Riggs of Queen Creek, Ariz., Chelsea Seal (husband Brad) and Britani Enea; grandson Parker Riggs; great-grandsons Brayden Vaughn, Ezra Enea and Hudson Seal; great-granddaughter Savannah Seal; sister Diane Surber of Anderson; brother Robert Tipton of Georgia (wife Peggy); niece Tamara Mink (husband Charles) of Lexington, Ky.; three nephews; also several cousins and families, of Cullman, Al.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Elvenia M. Tipton in 1989 and Thomas Verlie Tipton in 1967, brother Thomas L. Tipton and sister Helen Marie Martin.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Hopkins-Rector Funeral Home. The family will be asking friends and family to share their favorite memories of Charles. Interment will follow with military rites at the Forest Hill Cemetery.
