Celebrating local philanthropy
On Oct. 17, 1985, a few philanthropic-minded community members had the foresight to establish the Putnam County Community Foundation as a way to ensure that their friends and neighbors could contribute to the ever-changing needs of the community in perpetuity.
Perhaps you don’t know that Indiana is the only state that has a community foundation representing each county. In fact, Hoosiers have 94 community foundations working in our 92 counties, primarily due to the generosity of the Lilly Endowment’s 1990 Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) initiative which helped establish many of the state’s community foundations.
The Putnam County Community Foundation is one of just 12 community foundations in Indiana that predate the GIFT initiative, which truly exemplifies the philanthropic spirit of our community over the years.
One of the ways you can continue our county’s philanthropic efforts is by opening or contributing to an unrestricted fund at the Putnam County Community Foundation.
An unrestricted fund provides flexible resources which allow the Community Foundation to fund innovative and vital solutions to local needs. Unrestricted fund holders entrust the Community Foundation with the discernment of projects and organizations to receive grant funding through a competitive process based on community needs.
On Monday, Oct. 17 I hope you’ll honor our founders’ legacies by making a birthday gift to one of our 45 unrestricted funds such as our Community Grants Endowment. Your gift will be boosted with a $10,000 contribution from the Community Foundation as part of our Birthday Giving Challenge. This contribution will be proportionally distributed among eligible funds which receive a donation of any amount made on Oct. 17.
A complete list of eligible funds and more information can be found on our website at pcfoundation.org/give.
Your gift to one of these funds will support our communities’ biggest needs well into the future.
