More than 200 freshmen from Cloverdale and North Putnam high schools visited Ivy Tech Community College, DePauw University, Area 30 Career Center and the Ascena Retail Group distribution center on Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Known as the “freshmen experience,” the event allows local first-year students to explore Ivy Tech’s Greencastle site and participate in a series of sessions and activities designed to introduce the students to various careers, college majors, and continuing education opportunities.

“It’s been surprising to learn about the different types of things you can do after high school,” North Putnam freshman Kate Nyers said.

The students visited Area 30 Career Center, where Cloverdale’s Austin Jolly checks out a virtual paint booth, Ascena Retail Group, DePauw University and Ivy Tech Greencastle.

Students also visited nearby employers to explore post-graduate possibilities in our community and make connections with adults who work locally.

“This is a great opportunity for students to see their options after high school and initiate conversations about what path they may take,” Ivy Tech Greencastle site director Tammy Keenan said. “Ivy Tech offers degrees and certificates in nearly 50 programs at our Terre Haute campus and Greencastle site, making it an affordable and lucrative option.”

Students interested in visiting Ivy Tech’s Terre Haute campus or Greencastle site can schedule a tour at https://bit.ly/3Mr8Cws.

At Ivy Tech, nursing student Harly Spence demonstrates a venous doppler as North Putnam’s Robert Moran watches. Organizers look forward to the effort being an annual one where freshmen from each of the county high schools can participate.
