A Mooresville woman is housed in the Putnam County Jail after police say she battered and neglected a child under the age of 14.

The investigation began on Wednesday, Oct. 12 after the Putnam County Department of Child Services notified the Indiana State Police of allegations of battery and neglect against 62-year-old Christine Smith.

Trooper Colton Maynor, with assistance from Corrine Miller of Child Services, investigated the incidents, which were alleged to have taken place in Putnam County.

ISP turned the case over to the Putnam County Prosecutor’s Office for review. Upon request of the Prosecutor’s Office, a warrant was issued in Putnam Superior Court Friday morning.

Later that morning, Officer Alec Pettit of the Greencastle Police Department took Smith into custody without incident.

Smith was charged with two Level 5 felonies — neglect of a dependent resulting in bodily injury and domestic battery with bodily injury on a person less than 14 years old.
