Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated the following recent property-damage crashes:

• At 7:55 p.m. on Wednesday, Kevin P. Kearns, 58, Roachdale, was westbound on County Road 1000 North in a 1999 Ford F-250 when he hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Garrett W. Richardson, 64, Coatesville, was northbound on County Road 800 East in a 2018 Ford Fusion when he hit a deer.

Deputy Soilleux estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 4:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Kevin L. Calvert-Jimison, 34, Indianapolis, had pulled into the Millgrove Store parking lot at Hardware Road and U.S. 231 near Quincy in a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia, pulling a trailer registered to New Bern Transport Corp.

Calvert-Jimison told Deputy Todd Hopkins he was attempting to turn around and was trying to turn left around the store, but cut his turn too short due to limited visibility in rainy conditions. In doing so, he trailer collided with a parked 2009 Chevrolet Traverse that was parked in the parking lot north of the store. As the semi continued to move forward, it moved the other vehicle several feet.

The owner of the vehicle is an employee of the store.

There was no damage to the trailer, but moderate damage to the passenger side of the Traverse, as well as the hood, where the trailer went over it.

Hopkins estimated damage at $2,500-$5,00.

• At 11:40 p.m. on Sunday, David L. Winn, 40, Brazil, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado when he hit a deer.

Deputy Soilleux estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 10:12 a.m. on Sunday, Jennifer Mitchell, 59, McCordsville, was westbound on U.S. 36 and had just turned north into the address of 113 E. U.S. 36 in a 2016 Lexus GX. Zomaice J. Barr, 29, Indianapolis, was also westbound, approaching the driveway in a 2023 Kia Carnival.

Mitchell told Cpl. Scott Ducker she had just pulled into the driveway when Barr’s vehicle collided with the passenger side of her own.

Barr said there were vehicles ahead of him slowed or stopped. He said he applied his brakes but could not stop fast enough. He then steered into the gravel lane and could not avoid colliding with Mitchell’s vehicle.

Neither vehicle was towed. Ducker estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 4:57 p.m. on Saturday, Jay W. Thompson, 40, Indianapolis, was eastbound on Robert Weist Avenue in Cloverdale, approaching U.S. 231 in a 2013 Dodge Ram.

Thompson told Deputy Soilleux he thought it was a four-way stop and proceeded into the intersection. At that point, he hit a 2007 Ford Edge driven northbound by Autumn D. McIntyre, 50, Ladoga. The impact pushed McIntyre’s vehicle into a southbound 2018 Jeep Wrangler driven by Harold L. Cales, 41, Covington.

A passenger in Cales’ vehicle suffered chest pain and was transported to the hospital.

Both McIntyre’s and Cales’ vehicles had to be towed.

Soilleux estimated damage at $50,000-$100,000.

• Shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, traffic was backed up on eastbound Interstate 70 into Putnam County due to an earlier crash in Morgan County. Both eastbound lanes were at a standstill.

Karandeep Singh, 26, Bellerose, N.Y., came upon the stopped traffic in a 2023 Kenworth semi registered to Lynn Trucking with a fully loaded trailer and was unable to stop. He rear-ended a stopped 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer registered to Continental Express and driven by Donald. E. Shelby, 51, Indianapolis.

The impact pushed Shelby’s truck into a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Lora L. Lehman, 49, Indianapolis. In turn, Lehman’s vehicle was pushed into a 2015 Mini Cooper driven by Noah A. Winings, 24, Indianapolis.

Singh suffered severe injuries and had to be transported to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. Though he was unable to speak due to the nature of the injuries, when Cpl. Helmer asked him if he was unable to stop, he nodded yes.

None of the other drivers were injured.

Winings’ vehicle was the only one that did not have to be towed.

Helmer estimated damage at more than $100,000

• At 1:15 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, Bryson L. Book, 16, Greencastle, was eastbound on County Road 300 South in a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier when it left the road.

Once off the road, the car went through a farmer’s fence and rolled through the field numerous times, traveling approximately 200 feet before coming to a stop.

Cpl. Helmer asked Book what happened, and he said he had just put a new right rear tire on the vehicle, and it needed alignment. He said something when wrong in the rear of the vehicle, either something broke or a rear tire left the road. He initially said he was traveling about 42 mph.

After examining the damage, Helmer told Book that it appeared he had to be traveling faster than 42 mph. At that point, Book said he was going about 50 mph, and when he lost control, he accidentally hit the throttle instead of the brake and was going about 70 mph when he left the road.

The vehicle was towed. Helmer estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 1:20 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 20, Randhawa S. Baldish, 47, Brampton, Ontario, Canada, was eastbound on Interstate 70 in a 2019 Freightliner Cascadia tractor-trailer registered to Triple G Trucking, Milton, Ontario.

Baldish left the roadway because he was distracted, with the truck traveling for nearly 300 feet before making its way back onto the road. However, making contact with a culvert caused the oil pan to leak over a large area.

The tractor-trailer was towed. Deputy Randy Patrick estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.
