The Washburn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution plans to close 2022 with a pair of special events.

On Tuesday, Nov. 15, the DAR will host a public event celebrating Putnam County history with retired DePauw University archivist Wes Wilson. Then on Saturday, Dec. 17, the local chapter will again partner with Wreaths Across America for a ceremony honoring veterans buried throughout the county.

The Nov. 15 event will take place at 6 p.m. in the Kiwanis Room of the Putnam County Public Library, as Wilson will give a demonstration of how to navigate the DePauw University digital library. Wilson developed the library from a few hundred images to the tens of thousands of images it consists of today.

One key element is the collection of photographs of Putnam County photographer and 1933 DePauw alumnus Ralph Taylor. Photos include prom pictures and senior portraits from various Putnam County schools, as well as portraits and weddings of Putnam County families and many others of local historical significance.

This presentation is another part of the Washburn Chapter’s yearlong celebration of the 200th anniversary of Putnam County.

Then on Dec. 17, the Wreaths Across America ceremony will be at noon at Forest Hill. Like last year, anyone may sponsor wreaths for veterans buried in that cemetery. Anyone with particular people buried there may have the DAR ladies and cemetery staff place the wreaths.

This year, an additional option is available. The public may order wreaths for any veteran in any cemetery that may be picked up and placed. The wreaths will be delivered a few days before the ceremony. The DAR will contact people for pick up on that day. They will also be available starting at 9 a.m. on Dec. 17.

Wreaths may be ordered at https://wreathsacrossamerica.org/pages/167839.

Anyone may also make out checks to WAA and mail to Diana Brumfield, 324 E. CR 1125 South, Cloverdale, IN 46120, by Nov. 28, or bring them to the Nov. 15 meeting at the library.

Putnam County was established in 1822 and has more than 200 known cemeteries and burial sites. Countless veterans who fought are buried in this county.

The DAR is asking for the public’s help: Honor these veterans by sponsoring wreaths and placing them on their grave. Placing their wreath, remember them by saying their name and thanking them for their service. Educate youth by engaging them in this endeavor.

Anyone who plans to attend either of these events, or has any questions, may email dianabrumfield@gmail.com.

The Washburn DAR will also be honoring students who were selected for the annual Good Citizens Essay Contest on Dec. 6. Selected students, parents and school officials will be invited and typically fill the room.
