County Jail

Several people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Sunday

• At 11:58 p.m. Shannon F. Walker, 32, Roachdale, was lodged at the jail on a pair of local warrants.

• At 2 p.m. Jacob D. Anderson, 47, Garberville, Calif., was housed at the jail for possession of methamphetamine.

Saturday

• At 5 p.m. Valerie L. Ricketts, 36, Terre Haute, was lodged at the jail on a Vigo County warrant.

• At 11:03 a.m. Troy C. Strader, 33, Greencastle, was housed at the jail on a warrant.

Friday

• At 8:48 p.m. Bryce A. Brown, 18, Danville, was booked in for dealing in marijuana and possession of marijuana.

Thursday

• At 7:33 p.m. Jesse R. Taylor, 37, Terre Haute, was lodged at the jail on a warrant for failure to appear.

• At 2:53 p.m., Chasity M. Ramie, 42, Greencastle, was taken into custody for criminal trespass and disorderly conduct.

Wednesday

• At 9:33 p.m. Jeffery J. Burkhead, 33, Camby, was housed at the jail on a warrant for battery.

• At 3:30 p.m. Kevin G. Richee, 45, Indianapolis, was booked in for invasion of privacy.

• At 3:26 p.m. Karen S. Crosley, 62, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail on a warrant.

• At 9:31 a.m. Kristie L. Walker, 50, Greencastle, was taken into custody on a warrant.

City Police

Four recent arrests were reported by Greencastle City Police officers:

• At 4:52 a.m. Monday, Katlyn Brossman, 23, Brazil, was arrested by Officer Billy DeWitt after a traffic stop at Veterans Memorial Highway and Percy Julian Drive.

Taken into custody on a Parke County warrant for possession of marijuana, Brossman was lodged in the Putnam County Jail.

• At 9:55 p.m. Sunday, Kayla L. Coleman, 27, Indianapolis, was arrested by Officer Jared McDaniel.

Taken into custody on South Spring Street, Coleman was lodged in the Putnam County Jail for possession of stolen property and false identity statement.

• At 10:59 p.m. Saturday, Elizabeth E. Rumley, 33, Greencastle, was arrested by Officer DeWitt in the driveway of a Frazier Street residence..

Rumley was booked into the jail for driving while intoxicated with a prior conviction. She registered a blood-alcohol concentration of .19 percent under portable breathalyzer testing.

• At 2:30 p.m. Saturday on Hanna Street at Blackstock Stadium, Eli S. Wellman, 20, Westfield, was arrested by Det. Sgt. Matt Huffman.

Wellman was taken into custody for public intoxication, illegal consumption of an alcoholic beverage and public nudity. He registered a blood-alcohol concentration of .209 percent under portable breathalyzer testing.

Two recent summons were issued by city officers:

• At 9 a.m. Sunday, Ahmad Hinds, 22, Florissant, Mo., was issued a summons from Reserve Officer Dustin Martin.

Hinds was stopped in the parking lot of the Walmart superstore and cited for possession of marijuana.

• At 11:39 p.m. Wednesday, Tyler Puklus, 22, Indianapolis, was issued a summons from Officer Chris Helmer.

Stopped at Durham and Franklin streets, Puklus was cited for driving with a suspended license with a prior offense.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated 10 recent property-damage crashes, eight of which involved deer or other animals in the road.

• At 5:33 p.m. on Friday, Dean M. Mattingly, 73, Cloverdale, was eastbound on County Road 975 South in a 2009 Ford F-250. Samantha M. Manning, 30, Greencastle, was westbound in a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado.

Mattingly told Deputy Todd Hopkins he had been daydreaming and the next thing he know, his driver side mirror had collided with another vehicle. He said he did not stop right away but did not know why. He pulled over when he saw the other truck catch up to him.

Manning told Hopkins that Mattingly approached her in her lane of travel, and she could not avoid a collision, with his driver-side mirror striking her own.

Hopkins estimated damage at less than $1,000.

• At 11:04 p.m. on Thursday, Warren T. Coan, 34, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2019 Chevrolet Silverado when he hit a deer.

Deputy Josh Clark estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 7:50 p.m. on Thursday, Julia D. Leslie, 42, Pittsboro, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2013 Toyota Camry when she hit a deer.

Deputy Clark estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 6:49 p.m. on Thursday, Anna C. Kendall, 43, Greencastle, was westbound on U.S. 40 in a 2003 Subaru Baja when she hit a deer.

Deputy Clark estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, Matthew E. McCloud, 61, Cloverdale, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2004 Mitsubishi Montero when he hit a deer.

Maj. Dwight Simmons estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 2:52 p.m. on Wednesday, Lacey E. Blanque, 37, Greencastle, was southbound on County Road 250 East in a 2020 Toyota Corolla.

Blanque told Cpl. Brian Helmer she became distracted due to animals in the area then left the road, hit a culvert and then a utility pole. The impact caused the pole to snap in half.

Despite the impact, Blanque was not injured.

The car was towed. Helmer estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 9:46 a.m. on Wednesday, Rodger W. Zimmerman, 60, Coatesville, was negotiating a curve on County Road 125 East in a 2021 Mercedes van when several deer emerged from the wood line.

Zimmerman told Maj. Simmons he swerved to avoid the animals, which caused the van to make contact with a downed tree lying near the road. This caused a flat tire as well as damage to the left front fender.

Simmons estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 3:51 a.m. on Wednesday, Dru A. Teipen, 20, Reelsville, was traveling on County Road 625 South in a 2014 Toyota Corolla.

Teipen told Deputy Hopkins he was on his way home from a friend’s house and had dozed off multiple times on the way home. He said he fell asleep again and woke up as the vehicle was running off the road. He was unable to avoid colliding with a tree.

Teipen was transported to the hospital by his parents. The car was extremely damaged and had to be towed.

Hopkins estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, Vivian M. Whitaker, 72, Cloverdale, was southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2016 Buick LaCrosse when she hit a deer.

Deputy Hopkins estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000. The car was towed.

• At 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 8, Dustin B. Burris, 41, Greencastle, was eastbound on County Road 350 North when a German shepherd came into the road, and Burris could not avoid hitting it.

The dog did not survive the impact.

Deputy Randy Patrick estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to five incidents since last Wednesday evening:

• At 6:48 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD was dispatched to Pi Beta Phi at DePauw University for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 6:51 and determined that the activated detector was dirty. The detector was cleaned and the alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 7:05 p.m.

• At 9:06 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD was dispatched to Humbert Hall at DePauw for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 9:11 and determined the alarm was due to burnt popcorn. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 9:18 p.m.

• At 7 a.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a motor vehicle incident with injuries at 421 E. Franklin St. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 7:03 and assisted with patient care and cleaned up debris. GFD went back into service at 7:32 a.m.

• At 10:06 a.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to DePauw housing at 304 S. Indiana St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:10 and did not determine a cause for the alarm. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 10:15 a.m.

• At 10:55 a.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to Humbert Hall at DePauw for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:59 and determined the alarm was due to use of hair care products. The alarm system was reset. GFD went back into service at 11:09 a.m.

Additionally, GFD performed 10 medical assists and had one disregard during this timeframe.
